{"id":5851,"date":"2016-07-25T16:49:11","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T16:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/quienes-ensenaron-a-pastora\/"},"modified":"2019-04-04T22:45:41","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T20:45:41","slug":"who-taught-pastora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/who-taught-pastora\/","title":{"rendered":"Who taught Pastora?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a great friend, <strong>Sebasti\u00e1n G\u00f3mez <em>El Manojero<\/em><\/strong>, a <em>cantaor aficionado<\/em> born in the <em>La Feria<\/em> neighborhood of Seville in 1902. He had a great friendship with the Pav\u00f3n siblings: <strong>Arturo<\/strong>, <strong>Pastora<\/strong> and <strong>Tom\u00e1s<\/strong>. This man, Sebasti\u00e1n, knew many things about cante that had never been written down, and he used to collect everything about flamenco: posters, slate records, photographs and documents. He had an impressive archive to which I had access, and part of it is now at my home, handed over to me by his widow when he passed away in 1991. This man had the good habit to write down details of his conversations with those artists and with others who lived at la Alameda de H\u00e9rcules before the Spanish Civil War of 1936. For example, he left written notes of his conversations with <em>La Moreno<\/em> and the father of <strong>Caracol<\/strong>, <strong>Manuel Ortega Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>La Moreno<\/em> arrived in Seville as a little girl and lived most of her life in this city, where she befriended <strong>La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/strong>, who took her under her wing. Pastora even organized a fundraiser (also attended by <strong>Manuel Escacena<\/strong>) when this young girl got ill and required to undergo a delicate surgery. <em>La Moreno<\/em> was a cantaora of private parties and social gatherings. Her family was related to <em>El Negro de Rota<\/em>, and she was two years younger than Pastora, so they belonged to the same generation. However, according to Sebasti\u00e1n, Pastora learned a lot from her, particularly things from Jerez, where Mar\u00eda Moreno Vargas <em>La Moreno <\/em>lived for some time.<\/p>\n<p>It is often said that <em>La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/em> was a mixture of <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> and <strong>Manuel Torres<\/strong>, and these influences are undeniable, yet we can\u2019t forget her relationship with <strong>La Sarneta<\/strong>, <strong>La Juanaca de M\u00e1laga<\/strong>, <strong>La Trini<\/strong>, <strong>El Ni\u00f1o Medina<\/strong>, <strong>La Serrana<\/strong> and <strong>Juan Mojama<\/strong>. Besides, La Ni\u00f1a was born in a gypsy family where her grandfather <strong>Tom\u00e1s Cruz <em>El Calilo <\/em><\/strong>(reportedly a great singer of<em> tangos<\/em>) and her own mother, <strong>Pastora la de Calilo<\/strong> (a non-professional cantaora and bailaora) also used to sing. Pastora didn\u2019t grew up at La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, but at the Puerta Osario neighborhood (between the San Rom\u00e1n and the San Roque neighborhoods) where there were as many gypsies as in Triana (although this fact is never mentioned). The Pureta Osario gypsies where blacksmith gypsies like her own father, <strong>Francisco Pav\u00f3n Cruz <\/strong><em><strong>El Pa\u00edti<\/strong>, <\/em>who worked for many years in the L\u00e9rida family forge, on Sol street. La Juanaca de M\u00e1laga was a neighbor of Pastora on Butr\u00f3n Street, where <em>La Ni\u00f1a<\/em> was born. La Juanaca lived in that street with her daughter, whose father was <strong>Francisco Rojas Teresa<\/strong>, brother of the father of <strong>Pastora Imperio<\/strong>. The cantaoras <em>La Bilb\u00e1<\/em> and Juana Ruca also lived in that area of Seville when Pastora was a little girl, so it just makes sense that la Ni\u00f1a would have been influenced by them and by many other <em>cantaores<\/em> of that time.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget that our <em>cantaora<\/em>, Pastora, also lived for some time in Triana, on Castilla street, where she and her siblings met <strong>Manuel Cagancho<\/strong> and other members of this family (related to <em>El Fillo<\/em>) who lived in that neighborhood of Seville. <strong>Mar\u00eda <em>La Andonda<\/em><\/strong>, the partner of <strong><em>El Fillo<\/em><\/strong> and the mother of his children, also lived in Triana (and had family there, too) when La Ni\u00f1a used to go to that neighborhood. Thus, Pastora was exposed to a rich and extensive school of cante before she ever heard of Chac\u00f3n and Manuel Torres, whose influence on her is undeniable. In one of the notes of Sebasti\u00e1n G\u00f3mez <em>Manojero<\/em> he mentions precisely that: the variety of styles that Pastora knew since she was a girl, many of them never recorded on slate records, and learned from her own family of <em>cantaores<\/em> and from her surroundings. The same happened with Chac\u00f3n and Manuel Torres and with everyone else, that\u2019s why it\u2019s important to know where they were born, who they met and where they lived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
