I say \u201cTorres\u201d and not \u201cTorre\u201d (as it\u2019s often spelled) because when Manuel settled in Seville, at the beginning of the 20th century, he stated his name in the Civil Registry as \u201c<strong>Manuel Soto Torres<\/strong>\u201d and not as \u201cManuel Soto Loreto\u201d, which was his real name. The explanation for this is that he probably registered with his partner, the\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0<strong>Antonia Torres<\/strong> (<strong>Antonia\u00a0<i>La Gamba<\/i><\/strong>), who was significantly older than him. Besides, both the promotional posters and the newspapers of his time advertised him as \u201cManuel Torres\u201d or \u201cNi\u00f1o de Torres\u201d, if not \u201cNi\u00f1o de Jerez\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There are several versions about the origin of Manuel\u2019s stage name, such as the fact that his father was known as Juan\u00a0<i>el Torre<\/i>\u00a0(\u201c<i>John the Tower<\/i>\u201d) because he was very tall, or because he worked at a farm called \u201c<i>Las Torres<\/i>\u201d, in the province of C\u00e1diz. However, I personally lean towards the surname match with his partner\u00a0<i>La Gamba<\/i>. At the time when Manuel arrived in Seville, after achieving renown in his hometown, Jerez, his style of singing was unknown in the Andalusian capital. The gypsies of Triana\u2019s singing style was deep and linked, particularly the style of Juan\u00a0<i>el Pelao<\/i>, but if we listen to the recordings made by Manuel Cagancho, a gypsy blacksmith, we\u2019ll notice that the style of the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Jerez was something else.<\/p>\n<p>A very old man from Triana once told me that Manuel Torres used to sing very much like <strong>Francisco La Perla<\/strong>, a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0born in Triana but raised in C\u00e1diz. It\u2019s unlikely that Manuel ever met Francisco, but his father (who was also a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>) might have known him. Pepe, Manuel\u2019s brother, once told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0that it was from his father that he learned \u201c<i>A la una la pi\u00f3<\/i>\u201d, a\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<i>El Planeta<\/i>. So I assume that both Manuel and Pepe learned many other\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0from their father. They probably also learned something from their uncle Joaqu\u00edn Lacherna (brother of their mother, Tomasa), who apparently was a superb\u00a0<i>seguiriyero<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>El Ni\u00f1o the Jerez<\/i>\u00a0couldn\u2019t possibly have ever met\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as <strong>Manuel Molina<\/strong> and <strong>Tom\u00e1s el Nitri<\/strong>, but his father could, and it\u2019s very likely that the first teacher of Manuel was indeed his father, of whom little of substance has ever been written. The fact is that when Manuel arrived in Seville, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0was already a star, he made quite an impression singing by\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>, at a time when renowned\u00a0<i>seguiriyeros<\/i>\u00a0had already died, such as\u00a0<i>Frasco el Colorao<\/i>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0and Antonio Cagancho, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, oddly, Manuel started first gained fame in Seville not so much because his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but because of his skill breeding roosters for cockfighting, his great passion. He and the celebrated Juan Dulce, who was from C\u00e1diz, were regulars in the city\u2019s cockpits, particularly the one at the\u00a0<i>Sal\u00f3n Novedades<\/i>\u00a0in Seville (in the\u00a0<i>La Campana<\/i>\u00a0neighborhood) as can be attested by reading the newspapers of those days. However, when he began performing at the caf\u00e9s and flamenco halls of the Andalusian capital, the flamenco aficionados of Seville soon made him feel welcome, like a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from their own land. Manuel never left Seville, living in this city for more than half his life, and leaving there a lasting legacy. His own school and manner of singing would become characteristic of the city and its artists, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and Antonio Mairena, two great admirers of Torres. And let\u2019s not forget\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, the celebrated Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, who always adored him.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel was not the only one of his family to have ended up in Seville. His brother Manuel (the other Manuel Soto Loreto, who shows up in the city\u2019s Registry living in Triana), his sister Gabriela and brother Pepe Torres also moved to this city. Analysing the influence of Torres\u2019 family in La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules is a pending task for this city\u2019s historians, because it\u2019s impossible to talk about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0in Seville without mentioning such an important flamenco dynasty.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
