Some posters from the 1960s should be at the Fine Arts Museum in Seville, because they\u2019re masterpieces by renowned Andalusian painters such as Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n and Juan Vald\u00e9s. I also remember the posters by Luis Su\u00e1rez \u00c1vila, which now are highly prized by collectors.<\/p>\n<p>In those days, people would get the posters in the mail (at home or at the office) inside a cylindrical cardboard container, to prevent creases. Nowadays they are not even sent, but just published in social networks on the internet. Besides, some of them don\u2019t even look like flamenco posters, but rather seem like ads for a pizzeria or for a dollar store, just like those flyers that fill our mailboxes and are then quickly thrown in the garbage.<\/p>\n<p>We no longer have those posters with rosemary scent that just seemed worth keeping. Thankfully, good taste is still preserved by some festivals, but these are just a handful. It\u2019s also true that everything evolves and flamenco posters eventually change, like everything else. I\u2019m not saying that all of today\u2019s flamenco posters are bad, but more often than not, they\u2019re just ugly. Some people still remember those posters from the final days of the Opera Flamenca festivals, made for the companies of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rafael-Farina\/c112t\/5757519a0cf245cf71a2c1a5\">Rafael Farina<\/a>\u00a0or Juan de la Vara, which had no artistic merit whatsoever beyond the printed names of the artists.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the 1960s and 1970s the posters usually featured a theme associated with the town of each festival, such as the church\u2019s tower, the main square or one typical corner of the village. Basically, anything that would identify the place, making it stand out. It was a time when great painters, illustrators and photographers would flock to the festivals because they liked the aesthetic character of the small towns and the flamenco performed in those years, which was more traditional and far removed from the flamenco shows for tourists in the big cities. Yet, those artists no longer go to the festivals, perhaps because they don\u2019t like their new format, or perhaps because they miss the stars of those days, artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Matilde-la-trabajadora\/c112t\/578318380cf2f626feb1af85\">Matilde Coral<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fosforito\/c112t\/5674793c0cf203da56e4658c\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Melchor-de-Marchena\/c112t\/55f751df0cf20cc524a8f11d\">Melchor de Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda de Utrera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/55f7536a0cf2db6dcfb5bdd2\">Diego del Gastor<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jos%C3%A9-Menese-y-Enrique-de-Melchor\/c112t\/571706bd0cf28d4bbf4e66d2\">Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Soto-Sordera\/c112t\/55f754a80cf2de902a868a93\">El Sordera de Jerez<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago I talked with one of these painters who used to go to the flamenco festivals in the \u201860s and he told me that now there was nothing to motivate him to drive on a Saturday all the way to Utrera, Lebrija or Mairena del Alcor. \u201cThere is nothing that makes it worth going to those festivals anymore\u201d, he told me. I let him know that I disagreed, because I think there is still something that captures the spirit of those days, but he was partly right. The summer festivals had their golden age in the \u201860s, \u201870s and \u201880s. With the Bienal and other festivals of the same type, such as the Jerez and La Uni\u00f3n festivals, the aficionados have embraced the new format and no longer have the stomach to drive up a rural road to end up listening to the same stuff over and over until dawn. That is clearly reflected in the posters, from where art has virtually disappeared.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
