We have a lot to learn here in Andalusia, don\u2019t we?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-You mean, regarding the monuments to artists?<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yes, among other things, grandpa.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-In Seville there are monuments honoring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manolo Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, Pastora Imperio,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Aquel-gran-maestro-de-Triana\/c112t\/572c03780cf25326f6c6951b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naranjito de Triana<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2017\/12\/28\/Pepe-Peregil-y-Luis-Postigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pepe Peregil<\/a>. There is nothing for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>, who was one of the greatest, and the same goes for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silverio<\/a>, who was basically the father of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, kind of.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What\u2019s your take on this apathy?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-It\u2019s typical of Seville. Look, Seville is one of the main cradles of flamenco, yet it has no archive center about its history. Incredible, isn\u2019t it? That would be unthinkable in other cities. In the streets and parks of Vienna, from where you\u2019ve come from so amazed, you can find monuments completely integrated with the urban landscape. Could you imagine the capital of Austria without a monument to Johann Strauss? Yet, as you can see, there isn\u2019t even one\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0named after Silverio in Seville, the city where he was born and where he created a musical revolution. This was also the city where he died, although his remains were lost. It\u2019s truly a pity, Manolito.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I was particularly impressed at how well they care for the monuments to their artists, grandpa.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-They\u2019re very cultured, being such an ancient city with an unparalleled musical legacy. I remember that a few days after they put up the statue of Caracol in La Alameda, people would hang up stuff in his right arm, like panties and such, and someone even put a bottle of beer in his hand. The statue was often covered in bird droppings and littered with garbage. It was a real shame.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet, Seville is also an ancient city with an important cultural history, isn\u2019t it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, without a doubt, but if someone were to put a monument honoring Silverio in La Alfalfa, the neighborhood where he was born, many locals would complain and others would wonder what on earth that man did in Seville, because, although you may find this hard to understand, the people of Seville is very illiterate when it comes to flamenco. The locals don\u2019t know the history of this ancient art, and this is unforgivable.<\/p>\n<p><b>-They don\u2019t know its history, you say? Grandpa, that\u2019s pushing it.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No, they don\u2019t. They know about modern flamenco, but have no clue about the 1800s, which is when it all came together. The don\u2019t know who was El Burrero or Juan de Dios, La Campanera or Petra C\u00e1mara. They\u2019re unaware of Maestro Otero\u2019s important role in dance, in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, or that of Miguel de la Barrera. That goes to show the scant knowledge about flamenco culture among the people of Seville, in general.<\/p>\n<p><b>-You\u2019ll be flayed alive, grandpa.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-For telling the truth?<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yes, for telling the truth. You\u2019re too straightforward, grandpa, you could say things in a different, nicer way.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-To cover up the truth, Manolito?<\/p>\n<p><b>-It\u2019s not like that, grandpa. Well, we have to get ready for the new year\u2019s celebrations and you seem to be angry at everyone.
