{"id":5799,"date":"2018-01-02T17:07:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-02T17:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/asi-que-pasen-cinco-anos\/"},"modified":"2019-03-31T00:10:29","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T23:10:29","slug":"even-after-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/even-after-five-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Even after five years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo, Bel\u00e9n Maya, Jos\u00e9 Javier Le\u00f3n, Miguel \u00c1ngel Vargas and Jos\u00e9 Manuel Gamboa have created a manifesto that is doing the rounds in the social networks, titled\u00a0<i>\u201cAs\u00ed que pasen cinco a\u00f1os\u201d<\/i>\u00a0(<i>\u201cEven after five years\u201d<\/i>, an allusion to one of Frederico Garc\u00eda Lorca\u2019s plays), a well-thought and insightful manifesto celebrating the upcoming 100th anniversary of the historic\u00a0<i>Concurso de Cante Jondo<\/i>\u00a0which took place in Granada in 1922. I\u2019ve read the manifesto and I agree with some things and disagree with others. In my opinion, although I\u2019m critical of that contest, we should celebrate that anniversary, when the time comes, without focusing on its negative aspects, but highlighting its positive things, which were a lot, with all its pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p>We should put ourselves at that place in time to be able to understand what Falla and Lorca had in mind when that contest took place, having the support of half a dozen artists and writers. The fact the they undertook this project has great merit in itself, as it was a time when flamenco was looked down by society and by most of the country\u2019s intellectuals.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the error was in making a contest, instead of a cultural event showcasing recitals and concerts, because the contest wasn\u2019t well-though, although it was well-meaning. Both Falla and Lorca (let\u2019s not forget that the poet was just 24 years old) were concerned about the path that\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0had taken, and hoped to use the contest to unearth whatever was left of the towns\u2019 true\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>, finding it specially in the old\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/eldoradosfb.blogspot.ca\/2017\/12\/manifiesto-asi-que-pasen-cinco-anos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tenazas de Mor\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and in a little kid,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Luis-V%C3%A1zquez-y-El-Tenazas-de-Mor%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56298b500cf2dee0be955e00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caracol<\/a>, recommended by no other than\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>. Yes, recommended, although time would prove the old master right.<\/p>\n<p><i>Baile<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>toque<\/i>\u00a0were left out of the contest, as well as some basic\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0of flamenco. That is, they favored some\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0more than others, which is something that still happens in most contests of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Above all, they allowed competition among the artists of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, as if it were a matter of on-stage wrestling, although that is something that already happened in the\u00a0<i>caf\u00e9s cantantes<\/i>, when El Burrero and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0would setup singing duels between Fosforito<small>(1)<\/small>\u00a0and Chac\u00f3n, and between El Canario and Juan Breva.<\/p>\n<p>One of the signatories of this manifesto, Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo, also created a contest in the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>\u00a0(1980), the\u00a0<i>Giraldillo<\/i>\u00a0prize, which also made history in its first edition. That for sure was a competition among professionals, having as contestants\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fosforito<\/a><small>(2)<\/small>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curro Malena<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Curro-Malena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis de C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Luis-de-C%C3%B3rdoba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Los-intocables-del-cante\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calixto S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, who took the prize.<\/p>\n<p>There is no question that the 100th anniversary of the\u00a0<i>Concurso de Cante Jondo de Granada<\/i>\u00a0should be celebrated in style, because, with all its virtues and defects, all its achievements and failings, it promoted an art form that was looked down and misunderstood at the time. How much did this contest contribute to what would come two or three years later, the so-called\u00a0<i>\u00d3pera Flamenca?<\/i>\u00a0It\u2019s clear that the smart artists&#8217; agents of that time, such as Monserrat and Vedrines, took advantage of the great publicity surrounding the Granada contest to take flamenco artists to bigger venues, such as theaters or bullfighting rings, kickstarting a commercial period which was essential for flamenco\u2019s survival. Falla and Lorca, ironically, detested such commercialization, in which, incidentally, Chac\u00f3n and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/single-post\/2016\/1\/19\/Calixto-S%C3%A1nchez-y-Eduardo-Rebollar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, who were portrayed as the the supreme authorities in\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0in that contest, also took part.<\/p>\n<p>The year 2022 will mark the 100th anniversary of this historic contest and it should be celebrated in style.
