{"id":5789,"date":"2018-01-14T16:49:58","date_gmt":"2018-01-14T16:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/un-detector-de-ojana\/"},"modified":"2019-03-30T21:14:06","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T20:14:06","slug":"ojana-detector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/ojana-detector\/","title":{"rendered":"Ojana detector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the few things I demand from anyone who sings, dances or plays flamenco music is sincerity in their expression and interpretation, without attempting to cheat the public, faking it and disguising their performance with theatrics and such. Or, as we would say in flamenco jargon, without \u201cgiving\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>\u201d. I can\u2019t stand\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>, and I believe we\u2019re living in the golden age of\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>\u00a0in flamenco history, as now it\u2019s even worse than the coastal\u00a0<i>tablaos<\/i>(and some inland\u00a0<i>tablaos<\/i>) of the 1950s and 1960s. Sometimes, certain programs in the Spanish television (there was just one TV channel back then) would feature flamenco for tourists, and if you watch those programs now, you\u2019ll know what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>There are little-known artists in Seville, Jerez, C\u00e1diz or M\u00e1laga who possess the gift of art and naturality. Yet, few people are interested in them. In fact, that kind of artists seldom interested anyone, in any period in flamenco history. When in the early 1970s, the TV programs\u00a0<i>\u201cRito y geograf\u00eda del cante\u201d<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>\u201cRito y geograf\u00eda del baile\u201d<\/i>\u00a0came up, some obscure geniuses became known, but that didn\u2019t have a lasting impact, and it only succeeded in making life a little better for some artists, so they wouldn\u2019t have to beg in private parties for rich people (the so-called\u00a0<i>se\u00f1oritos<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Perrate-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7c600cf29064e5f24d50\">Perrate<\/a>, Manolito el de Mar\u00eda,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/31\/La-Perrata\">La Perrata<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tia-Anica-La-Piri%C3%B1aca\/c112t\/55f752400cf24af6ea3c235e\">La Peri\u00f1aca<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Joselero-de-Mor%C3%B3n\/c112t\/5750eeb70cf231679147ff6b\">Joselero<\/a>, el Negro del Puerto or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda<\/a>\u00a0were considered natural geniuses, but some people referred to them as \u201chomemade\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u201d, that is,\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0without any artistic merit.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0was among them, for example, even as he helped some of those\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and, I dare to say, used them too, as was the case with Juan Talega, Tom\u00e1s Torres or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/15\/Rosal%C3%ADa-de-Triana-y-Antonio-Sanl%C3%Bacar\">Rosal\u00eda de Triana<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays we have ten or twelve of these \u201chomemade\u201d artists, who in my opinion have great value, yet few people take them in account. That is, history has been repeating itself from the very origins of this art, when the Gypsies of Triana came to enliven the parties of the\u00a0<i>se\u00f1oritos<\/i>\u00a0in the high-class houses of 19th century Seville. That was when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>, whom Seville seems to have forgotten miserably, decided to give value to those men and women who had lived traditional flamenco in their own homes.<\/p>\n<p>How many of today\u2019s\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>, who seem to have learned flamenco in a martial-arts school, really possess any artistic sense? Let\u2019s consider\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/19\/La-esencia-de-Perico-el-Pa%C3%B1ero\">Perico El Pa\u00f1ero<\/a>\u00a0and his brother Jos\u00e9, for example. How many people really appreciate Perico el Pa\u00f1ero, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mora%C3%ADto-Chico-Fernando-de-la-Morena\/c112t\/55f77be40cf2db6dcfb5d98b\">Fernando el de la Morena<\/a>\u2019s cante. Perhaps now is the time for those of us who write about this art and have some influence in public opinion to stop \u201cgiving\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>\u201d ourselves, and get busy defending the true flamenco that is still sidelined in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how many more years I\u2019ll be working as a flamenco critic and journalist, but I have to say that every day I get more disenchanted with that plastic flamenco which is sold as if it were gold, and every day I like more the other kind of flamenco, the one that really moves me. Thus, I\u2019ll act accordingly, because I\u2019m up to the neck. I just wish that someone from, say, Japan, some electronic genius, invented an \u201c<i>ojana<\/i>\u00a0detector\u201d, because that would make them rich. That is, a device that would trigger an alarm whenever a\u00a0<i>flamenquito<\/i>tries to fake it in some tablao, festival or Facebook\u2019s wall.<\/p>\n<p>For Heaven\u2019s sake, I\u2019m tired of\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><i>Translated by P.
