That\u2019s not true, as\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is the topic I write more often about, perhaps because I like to sing and wanted to become a professional\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, and because I am passionate when I talk about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0among friends. Maybe what they meant to say was that I seldom get involved in those controversies that arise in Facebook about the different styles of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, its flamenco schools, the variants of each\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>, their creators, etc. I used to discuss those topics extensively when I directed and presented a radio show in Seville, because I could illustrate the different opinions playing records and the listeners could participate live and also give their opinions. Yes, that was fun. I enjoy talking about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with a record player at hand or when I socialize with\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>There is one subject I\u2019d like to address today, to start the week proposing topics for a healthy debate: the personal styles of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>attributed to some or other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, particularly artists from a century ago, as if contemporary\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>had never created anything. One example: Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula (Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra, 1875-1933) is considered by critics and analysts to have been the creator of more\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0than the renowned Sarneta de Jerez. Yet, according to his son, of all the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0attributed to him, only one was really his own creation. Juraco certainly created one or more\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, but since he was not Gypsy (although he reportedly was a great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, on par with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0and Curro Dulce) then he gets credit for nothing. Jos\u00e9 Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez,\u00a0<i>Juraco<\/i>, was a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Alcal\u00e1 who performed in the mid 1800s in Seville\u2019s dance halls together with Lorente, Silverio, Perea y Sartorio.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never quite believed that there were so many creators and composers in the 19th century, but none in our days. Gypsy or not. People would say\u00a0<i>seguiriyas \u201cde Paco Luz\u201d<\/i>, but we never hear anyone saying\u00a0<i>tangos, alegr\u00edas, ronde\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>grana\u00ednas \u201cde\u00a0<a>Morente<\/a>\u201d<\/i>. How much music was created by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Juan El Lebrijano<\/a>, to name another example of a creative and very unique\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>? Has anyone counted how many\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>,\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>canti\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0he created? Well, no, because the great creator is considered to be Pop\u00e1 Pinini instead, the grandfather of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/9\/7\/Miguel-Funi-una-Giralda-de-Lebrija\">Miguel Funi<\/a>. Pinini\u2019s\u00a0<i>canti\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0(beautiful and very\u00a0<i>flamenca<\/i>, by the way) is almost as good as a composition by Mozart. Yet, was it really created by Pinini, or was it just one\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0that was performed among his family, in Utrera or Lebrija, which he then performed with his unique style?<\/p>\n<p>You can be sure of this: a century from now, people will be talking about the\u00a0<i>alegr\u00edas<\/i>,\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>,\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>canti\u00f1as \u201cde\u00a0<a>El Pele<\/a>\u201d<\/i>. When Frijones was alive, no one would acknowledge his creative abilities. Yet, after he died in 1917, if anyone sang the way he did, people would say\u00a0<i>\u201cOl\u00e9! El cante de Frijones!\u201d<\/i>. Then, little by little, that\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, who performed more often in jails than on stages, became regarded as the Schumann of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. On the other hand, people say that all that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0ever sang was created by someone else: the\u00a0<i>petenera \u201cde Medina\u201d<\/i>; the\u00a0<i>tangos \u201cde Triana\u201d<\/i>; the\u00a0<i>seguiriyas \u201cde Paco la Luz\u201d<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>\u201cde El Ciego La Pe\u00f1a\u201d<\/i>; the\u00a0<i>fandangos \u201cde\u00a0<a>El Pinto<\/a>\u201d<\/i>; the\u00a0<i>soleares \u201cde La Sarneta\u201d<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>\u201cde La Gilica\u201d<\/i>; and the\u00a0<i>bambera \u201cof the people\u201d<\/i>. How would it be possible that a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0with such talent, sense of\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0and musicality, tempo, etc., would have never been able to create anything? Yet, no, the great creative genius is considered to be La Andonda, instead.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love to talk about this all, rather than write about it, but in a good cultural radio or TV show. I\u2019d even like to create a discographic collection to put order in all this chaos about the creators and performers. I\u2019d definitely get some artists down from their pedestals, and get others up. Because instead of repeating all that everyone else says, I rather play boules.
