Some time ago I watched him sing and dance in a video and I was taken aback. I couldn\u2019t believe that a young kid could have so much art and look so much older when getting up and dancing a little\u00a0<i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>. I would assume that he would be a fan of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>\u00a0and be full of\u00a0<i><a>ojana<\/a><\/i>, yet he is a fan of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/19\/La-esencia-de-Perico-el-Pa%C3%B1ero\">Perico El Pa\u00f1ero<\/a>\u00a0and when he sings he recalls the lives of his ancestors with his\u00a0<i>cante gitano<\/i>\u00a0(or rather\u00a0<i>\u201ccante gitano-andaluz\u201d<\/i>, like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0would say). This is obviously a miracle in our days, when the youngsters are often so distracted. I don\u2019t mean to criticize those who try to emulate Morente or Camar\u00f3n, as I myself looked up to them, too, and not just regarding their singing style, but the way they felt and experienced\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. I say this on account of those who are still wary of flamenco because they feel is a thing of their grandparents, anachronistic and kind of old. I like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/01\/23\/Alonso-El-Piruli\">Alonso N\u00fa\u00f1ez,\u00a0<i>El Purili<\/i><\/a>, precisely for that reason: because he has learned from his elders and from meeting other people outside of his family in gatherings of flamenco experts (the so-called\u00a0<i>cabales<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>This kid from La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n has a style of singing and dancing that reminds me of the likes of Anzonini, Paco Valdepe\u00f1as,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/9\/7\/Miguel-Funi-una-Giralda-de-Lebrija\">Miguel Funi<\/a>\u00a0or Antonio Mairena (the cantaor from Mairena was a superb bailaor). There have been many others like them, but not a lot, much less young like El Purili. We must be fair and mention artists from Seville like Luis Pe\u00f1a and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/20\/Javier-Heredia\">Javier Heredia<\/a>, who for years have been practising and preserving this school, with few people caring, that\u2019s the truth. Perhaps it\u2019s Perico El Pa\u00f1ero, from Algeciras, who is spreading that way of doing flamenco. And his brother Jos\u00e9, too. They\u2019re both artists of great purity, meaning authenticity and sincerity, not an absence of blending. I\u2019m old enough to know very well what purity in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0means.<\/p>\n<p>El Purili is still a teenager and we don\u2019t really know which paths he\u2019ll chose in the future, but I believe he won\u2019t stray much from his current path, because we can see in his face, when he sings and dances, that this is the way he likes and feels. It\u2019s truly worth watching the video where El Pa\u00f1ero sings and El Purili comes out to meet him, as in a trance, drunk with the art of his mentor. That\u2019s why I don\u2019t think he\u2019ll ever lose this magic, because that\u2019s what he truly cares about. I talked to him yesterday to write this article and I was amazed at how well he understands flamenco in general and\u00a0<i>cante gitano<\/i>\u00a0in particular. He\u2019s 17 years old but has the maturity of a 50-year-old, possessing wisdom uncommon in a teenager. Perhaps that\u2019s because he was born in a family of flamencos, although not all perform on stages.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rubio-de-Pruna\/c112t\/57c70973f97b693d9578acf2\">Rubio de Pruna<\/a>\u00a0is a first cousin of his father, and, according to himself, his great-grandfather was a superb\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, although he never performed on a stage.<\/p>\n<p>When I hear this kid talking and then see those artists giving\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>to make money, I get in a bad mood and curse. Flamenco, the kind of flamenco Purili does, is a legacy that has to be taken care of. Anyone can sing as they feel like, to the best of their abilities, but it\u2019s unacceptable to barter away or damage that legacy, a treasure that we have in Andalusia which we sometimes fail to appreciate, unaware of its importance.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying this just on account of this kid from La L\u00ednea, but also for those who try to sing a\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a de\u00a0<a>Chac\u00f3n<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and ruin it, even forgetting the lyrics. A\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a de Chac\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0is also an important legacy, although a certain writer of Jerez would not regard Chac\u00f3n as a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but merely as a \u201csinger\u201d (\u201c<i>coplero<\/i>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>El Purili is a treasure of our days, and those of us who have the responsibility of looking after the\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>must pay attention to him, accordingly. Not for him to make money with our help (although there\u2019s nothing wrong with that), but so that other young artists follow in his footsteps.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
