Who deifies them? Themselves? Or is it us, the aficionados and critics? Not all\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0believe they\u2019re gods, but some cases are worth of a TV show. There are no surviving statements to the press by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio Franconetti<\/a>, but it\u2019s know that he was one of the first ones to get conceited, perhaps because he was the first great star of\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>. Going around towns and cities in Andalucia, challenging other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, as he reportedly did, is a sign of egomania, narcissism and vainglory. He also used to say he was the best, \u201cand after me, Curro Durse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Could you imagine\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Lucia<\/a>\u00a0saying the he was the best, and after him,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-soledad-de-Manolo-Sanl%C3%BAcar\/c112t\/566a47510cf2391068765f14\">Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/a>? Impossible, because Paco was never arrogant. Likewise,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0never said anything that could be construed as presumptuous. Same with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n de la Isla<\/a>, one of the humblest geniuses that have ever existed. On the other hand,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>\u00a0were all incorrigible egotists, bordering delusion. We have their press and radio interviews. As far as I know, no one has thought of analysing these interviews to create a psychological profile for each of them, trying to reveal the true personalities of these three starts of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember now (as he just passed away) when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFQu%C3%A9-se-ha-llevado-Agujetas\/c112t\/56805d8b0cf23a10fe36da2a\">Manuel Agujetas<\/a>\u00a0once declared that the only true\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>left in the world were himself and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Chocolate<\/a>. He would say it with conviction and sincerity, because he truly believed it. Pepe Marchena was perhaps the one of the haughtiest of all, saying that he had \u201cdressed up\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>with style\u201d, and that he had given\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0the class it never had before him, which was like a metaphorical slap in the faces of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, who were singing in the theatres of Spain before Marchena had even been born. Moreover, the Master of Masters once said that, before him,\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0was \u201clow-brow\u201d. He didn\u2019t come up with the \u201cMaster of Masters\u201d thing himself, it was the celebrated journalist Bobi Deglan\u00e9 who gave him that title, although Marchena liked the label and used it often. Antonio Mairena even thought himself more important than God, and he believed to have been divinely elected to save Gypsy-Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>from the\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0conspiracy. That\u2019s what the gypsy master said when he was awarded the Golden Key of Cante in C\u00f3rdoba, an award he considered to be a mandate from the departed gypsy masters.<\/p>\n<p>Pastora Pav\u00f3n, on the other hand, even knowing that she was the greatest, as she was indeed, never showed any hint of haughtiness. Once she was asked what she thought was her contribution to the world, and she replied it was sweetened beer, because when she was a little girl, some one gave her a beer and, finding it bitter, she put sugar on it before drinking it. However, in another occasion she said that she didn\u2019t want to become a singer of popular songs, because she didn\u2019t want to end the careers of the great pop song singers of those days. Her brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>, one of the great geniuses in the history of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, was incredibly humble, although his sister-in-law Elo\u00edsa Alb\u00e9niz (wife of Tom\u00e1s\u2019 brother,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo<\/a>) said that Tom\u00e1s once told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0in one party: \u201cYou may be God, but I always give all my worth\u201d. That would certainly have been a thinly veiled reference to the inconsistency of the genius from Jerez, who sometimes would take his audience to ecstasy, and others would be a complete disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the geniuses I\u2019ve been lucky to have known well, the humblest two were Enrique Morente and Camar\u00f3n. I never heard them praise themselves, or say they were great (even as they were). Maybe they knew something that Napoleon once said about this: wise men search for wisdom, fools think they found it. I\u2019m not saying this regarding a famous\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0of our times, who claimed to have created the flamenco of the 21st century.
