{"id":5729,"date":"2016-04-06T17:21:04","date_gmt":"2016-04-06T17:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/donde-nacio-la-nina-de-los-peines\/"},"modified":"2019-02-20T14:08:39","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T13:08:39","slug":"where-was-nina-de-los-peines-born","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/where-was-nina-de-los-peines-born\/","title":{"rendered":"Where was Ni\u00f1a de los Peines born?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now and then, this topic comes up: the true birthplace of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0of all times,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>. If what we want to know is the exact place where her mother, Pastora Cruz Vargas, gave birth to her, it would be impossible to find out. In such cases, what counts is the christening or baptism certificate, and this religious document states that the girl was born at number 19 of Butr\u00f3n Street in San Rom\u00e1n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0parish, on February 10, 1890. It was her father, Francisco Pav\u00f3n Cruz\u00a0<i>El Pa\u00edti<\/i>, who have the address, and he wouldn\u2019t have any reason to lie.<\/p>\n<p>Five years later, in 1895, the same address shows up recorded for Pastora\u2019s<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0aunt, Gloria Cruz Vargas, the sister of her mother, so it\u2019s very likely that La Ni\u00f1a was born in her aunt\u2019s house. In 1890, the whole Cruz family was settled in this area, Puerta Osario<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0was born in 1893 in this same neighborhood, on Leoncillos street. Pastora\u2019s father worked at the metal workshop belonging to the L\u00e9rida family (from Triana), on Sol street, which is at the end of Butr\u00f3n Street. Thus, it wouldn\u2019t make sense that Pastora were born in any other area of Seville.<\/p>\n<p>Some people say that the artist was born in the Triana<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0neighborhood, on Castilla street. She reportedly told this to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>\u2019s chauffer, Federico Rodr\u00edguez Ruiz, from Gerena. The Pav\u00f3n family lived for some time in this popular street, at number 130, but in 1901 this house is recorded as the address of other relatives. However, if Pastora had known for sure that she had been born in this neighborhood of Seville, which has such rich flamenco tradition, she would have told everyone, yet she never said so publicly. She did say once that she was born on number 19 of Valle street, which is right next to Butr\u00f3n street, so it\u2019s not unlikely she mixed these streets up.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, there is people who say that she was born in the town of Arahal, in the province of Seville, which is also the birthplace of her mother, and is also the birthplace of her older brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo<\/a>, who came to this world in 1882. Yet, many years ago I checked all the information of this family in Arahal, and three years after Arturo was born all had left the town, both the parents of Pastora and also her maternal grandparents, Tom\u00e1s Cruz and Gracia Vargas. They settled in San Rom\u00e1n, where La Ni\u00f1a was born.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, another theory is that this\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0was born in another town in the province of Seville, Tocina, where her dad grew up. In this town people insist that she was born on Soledad street, in the house of her paternal grandmother Rosario Cruz Carrillo. They say it as if they had witnessed her birth themselves. Yet, if the whole family was settled in San Rom\u00e1n and Puerta Osario, in streets such as Butr\u00f3n, Valle, Ver\u00f3nica and Muro de los Navarros, it doesn\u2019t make sense that she would be born in any of these other towns, unless\u00a0<i>do\u00f1a<\/i>Pastora (mother) would unexpectedly have gone into labour in one of these places. Thus, Pastora Pav\u00f3n Cruz, the celebrated\u00a0<i>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/i>, saw her first light in this neighborhood of Seville, where, incidentally, there were almost as many Gypsies as in Triana.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the first Gypsy settlement in Seville was located in the neighboring parish of Santa Catalina<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/span>, and many Gypsy families moved from there to Triana. The reverse also happened: many Gypsies of Triana returned to Puerta Osario and San Rom\u00e1n, some to work, others to be closer to Cristo de los Gitanos<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0. The great writer Juan Jos\u00e9 Ni\u00f1o<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0was born precisely near this neighborhood, in San Roque<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/span>, on Conde Negro Street, later settling in Triana, where he lived the rest of his life. He wasn\u2019t born in Triana, just as other Gypsy artists assumed to be from that neighborhood weren\u2019t born there either.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, to be honest, the important thing is not so much where was an artist born, but where they grew up, and Pastora was born in Puerta Osario and lived there until her teens. The family then moved to Alameda de H\u00e9rcules<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0(living only a couple of months in Triana) where she lived until her death in 1969. Pastora lived more than 50 years in La Alameda, which at the time was flamenco\u2019s Mecca, and there she soaked in the ever-present art from that area of Seville, populated by all of the flamenco artist from the time when Pastora was young. It was like a school of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and La Ni\u00f1a learned from all these\u00a0<i>maestros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>maestras<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Translation notes:<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0San Rom\u00e1n parish is roughly at the north-east section of old-town Seville.<\/p>\n<p><sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0<i>La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/i>, Pastora Pav\u00f3n, was named after her mother, Pastora Cruz Vargas.<\/p>\n<p><sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0<i>Puerta Osario<\/i>\u00a0(literally \u201cOssuary Gate\u201d).
