{"id":5724,"date":"2016-03-30T17:28:30","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T17:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/el-medico-del-cante-jondo\/"},"modified":"2019-03-01T00:51:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T23:51:24","slug":"el-medico-del-cante-jondo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/el-medico-del-cante-jondo\/","title":{"rendered":"The doctor of cante jondo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ram\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez Vargas,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0also known as\u00a0<i>Ram\u00f3n de Triana<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/i>, born in Triana in 1854 and died in La Feria neighborhood of Seville in 1905, was famous not only for his wonderful singing of\u00a0<i>soleares alfareras<\/i>,\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>, but also for his extensive knowledge about\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>We know that when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0arrived in Seville in 1885, when he was only 17 years old, he contacted Ram\u00f3n to learn about the old styles of Triana\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, which, oddly, he seldom performed later on. Ram\u00f3n was an institution of Sevillan\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, a teacher, advocating for schools of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0at a time when only schools of guitar and\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0existed. Although Ram\u00f3n was born in Triana, he grew up outside that neighborhood and his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0was on par with other celebrated\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of Seville such as Antonio Silva\u00a0<i>El Portugu\u00e9s<\/i>, Fernando el de Triana and Rafael Pareja, who also advocated the formal teaching of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Young\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0would go to Ram\u00f3n\u2019s house on Palomas street (the same street where Cuervo Sanluque\u00f1o y Frijones de Jerez lived) to learn how to sing properly. Ram\u00f3n became ill with lung tuberculosis, a disease that took him to his grave, and since he was no longer able to sing at the caf\u00e9s and private parties, he set up a kind of \u201cdoctor\u2019s practice\u201d for\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This story was told to me by the guitarist from Macarena, Antonio Peana, who assured me he heard it from the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Rodr\u00edguez\u00a0<i>El Colorao<\/i>\u00a0(also from Macarena), who was Ram\u00f3n\u2019s disciple. The young\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>would arrive at the home of the old man from Triana, he would listen to them singing, and would write down in a notebook the defects and virtues of their performance. At the end of the session he would write down his recommended \u201ctreatment\u201c, handing them his notes.<\/p>\n<p>In those days, over a century ago,\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>as made an effort to learn well the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, and would ask the great masters to teach them. It was a different method of teaching, comparing with our days, since not even slate records existed yet. Fernando el de Triana had a tavern in Camas (a town near Seville), La Sonata, where young\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0from Seville and other places would go and ask the old\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0to help them with lyrics and guitar tones. That\u2019s how he made a living, because he had a hard time after he was no longer strong enough to sing. The same happened with Ram\u00f3n el Ollero, Pepe Villalba o El Portugu\u00e9s, among others, who never sang in theatres or companies, but only in private parties.<\/p>\n<p>Would\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>, one of today\u2019s great masters of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, who no longer performs on stages, be successful if he set up in his house a \u201c<i>cante<\/i>\u2019s practice\u201d like them? Hard to know.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0told me one morning at his house that he would walk from Mairena to Alcal\u00e1 (about a 5-mile walk) to learn from Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula how to sing the\u00a0<i>cante de la Adonda<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>cante de Jos\u00e9 El Pelao<\/i>, among others. Antonio was then just 20 years old, but he was very eager to learn everything, not from records, but directly from masters who, like Joaqu\u00edn, never recorded anything.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Juan Valderrama<\/a>\u00a0also told me that when he arrived in Madrid, after Chac\u00f3n had died, he would go in rooms with Manolo Pav\u00f3n or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/10\/20\/Jos%C3%A9-Cepero\">Jos\u00e9 Cepero<\/a>\u00a0to learn how the genius from Jerez would sing the\u00a0<i>cantes de La Sarneta por sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0or how to make the\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0\u201cswitch\u201d of Curro Durse.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio Mairena and Valderrama were among the greatest students of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0I\u2019ve ever known, that\u2019s why they achieved so much success, each with their own, unique style. I won\u2019t make the mistake of saying that today\u2019s young performers of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0aren\u2019t great students, because it\u2019s not fair to generalize. Today\u2019s methods of teaching are certainly different, just like so many other things in this art have changed. Sometimes I\u2019m under the impression that many of today\u2019s young performers only want to learn the bare basics to become a professional and make a living out of this art. Yet, that\u2019s just my impression, the impression of an aficionado who, when aspiring to become a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, would seek the old masters to learn the ageless trade of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
