{"id":5711,"date":"2015-12-21T10:26:03","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T10:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/sonando-con-el-chocolate\/"},"modified":"2019-04-10T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T20:11:00","slug":"sonando-con-el-chocolate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/sonando-con-el-chocolate\/","title":{"rendered":"Dreaming of El Chocolate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most impressive\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0I\u2019ve known in my life was Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez Montoya\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/12\/20\/El-Chocolate\">El Chocolate<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Jerez de la Frontera, 1930 &#8211; Sevilla, 2005), a dear friend whom I greatly admired. He was a Gypsy, very Gypsy, but it was possible to talk about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with him without getting all worked up, because he was a good aficionado and liked many non-Gypsy\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>. He once told me something that made a great impression on me, which I took it as a subtle message: \u201cNext to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>, the rest of us\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0are just a bunch of drunkards\u201d. He said that in the presence of a witness who can corroborate this, the agent Antonio Montoya, at the\u00a0<i>Cafeter\u00eda Am\u00e9rica<\/i>, in Seville.<\/p>\n<p>El Chocolate was a great admirer of Ni\u00f1o de Marchena, and the admiration was mutual. One day, when Marchena was already in very frail health, he told Antonio: \u201cChocolate, when I die, sing me a\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>a in front of my coffin\u201d. Chocolate didn\u2019t forget the wish of the master. The day Marchena died and was buried, Chocolate was travelling back to Seville, and he asked the driver of the car he was riding in to stop at the gates of the cemetery. \u201cYou\u2019re crazy, Antonio! It\u2019s raining cats and dogs!\u201d said the driver. Regardless, Chocolate grabbed the iron bars of the graveyard\u2019s gate and he sang the\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>a, completely drenched by the pouring rain, certainly the most moving performance of his life.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio was a unique human being, possessing a fine grace and having a very peculiar life philosophy. He mostly talked about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and used to say that when he went to bed, he tossed and turned all night until the morning, trying to figure out one seguiriya. He would also say that he knew one\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/arturo-pavon-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\">Arturo Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, the eldest brother of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, which had never been recorded, but which he planned to record one day. Many times I asked him to sing that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but he would always refuse emphatically, until one night I managed to convince him to write down the music, which he did, having these unknown lyrics:<\/p>\n<p><i>Ay, qu\u00e9 dol\u00f3 de mi pare,<br \/>\ncu\u00e1ntas fatiguitas.<br \/>\nC\u00f3mo se arrugan<br \/>\nla piel de su cara<br \/>\ny de sus manitas.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ah, what sorrows my father has,<br \/>\nso many ordeals.<br \/>\nHow wrinkled<br \/>\nThe skin of his face<br \/>\nAnd of his hands<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Antonio, this was a\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0created by Paco la Luz, arranged by Arturo. Paco la Luz lived at Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, in Seville, until 1901, when Arturo was 19 years old and was already a renowned\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>. They were neighbors in Alameda, so they must have known each other well.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Chocolate never agreed to write his memoirs, and not because I didn\u2019t ask him repeatedly. He wanted two million pesetas for his memoirs, which was strange, because he didn\u2019t care much about money. The reason he never agreed to have his memoirs written was because he didn\u2019t trust what writers wrote, he would say we made up lots of stuff. When he passed away, he took with him thousands of life stories, anecdotes, unrecorded\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, unknown lyrics and, above all, a unique sound, a seasoned voice, dark like charcoal, natural, authentic.<\/p>\n<p>He always thought of himself as the \u201cfourth Pav\u00f3n\u201d, because he loved that school: Pastora, Arturo and Tom\u00e1s. Just to annoy him, I would retort that he wasn\u2019t the fourth, but the fifth Pav\u00f3n, because the fourth would have been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>, the husband of Ni\u00f1a de los Peines. That would greatly annoy him, indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Two days before his death I was at his flat with the guitarist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Gaspar-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56e6209c0cf201bfd277ec0a\">Antonio Carri\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and Leo, an employee of Antonio Montoya. Chocolate was laying on the sofa in the living room, and his face was death personified, like a true Gypsy seguiriya. I had to kneel to give him a kiss, the last kiss, because he didn\u2019t have enough strength to get up. I would never forget that scene, the scene of a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0whom I often dream about, just as he dreamt of that seguiriya which he was never able to finish.
