There are the nostalgic ones, which is my case, and I acknowledge this publicly: I miss those who are no longer with us, regardless if I\u2019ve known them in person or not. There are also those aficionados who only care about the living artists, especially the younger ones. Then there are those whose interest is limited to either guitar,\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. There is also the aficionado who is against all others, becoming intolerant of everyone. Finally, there is the fan of his idol only, for example, the\u00a0<i>mairenista<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>marchenista<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>caracolero<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>camaronero<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>morentiano<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>tortista<\/i>\u00a0or the\u00a0<i>povedista<\/i>. It\u2019s a mistake to believe that if someone likes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>, they can\u2019t like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0either. It\u2019s like assuming that someone who likes fish and chips can\u2019t like bacon and eggs or BBQ chicken either. In painting, is it possible to admire both Picasso and Antonio L\u00f3pez? Why not?<\/p>\n<p>For some time there has been certain intolerance towards those among us who like melodic\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mayte-Mart%C3%ADn-desconcertante-y-libre\/c112t\/5624632a0cf2c6c6437c0ce8\">Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arc%C3%A1ngel-y-Miguel-%C3%81ngel-Cort%C3%A9s\/c112t\/565ddfd50cf2bf20d56f4f28\">Arc\u00e1ngel<\/a>, because, it seems, one has to like the rough and old\u00a0<i>cante rancio<\/i>, as it happened when the Andalusian summer festivals came into being and Mairena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>, el\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tio-Borrico-de-Jerez\/c112t\/56bd4ba90cf2fd311ce03c4f\">T\u00edo Borrico<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Chocolate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Terremoto-de-Jerez\/c112t\/569c5f4c0cf224d46570178e\">Terremoto de Jerez<\/a>\u00a0were in vogue. If someone mentioned\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>, people would stare as if the Sacred Scriptures of Gypsy-Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0were being defaced. Antonio Mairena, whom I admired and befriended in my early years as flamenco aficionado (and whose teachings I still admire) told me one day, when I mentioned Marchena, that \u201c<i>this one is not one of us<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Gypsy\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0or his sister\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0adored Marchena. Tom\u00e1s even said that when God gave salt to the earth, most of it fell on\u00a0<i>Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/i>. At the time of these geniuses, weren\u2019t there any brawls among aficionados and among the artists themselves? Certainly so, there have been differences of opinion in all ages. It\u2019s a known fact that El Planeta complained to El Fillo that he wasn\u2019t adhering to the established standards of those days, and we\u2019re talking one hundred and seventy-five years ago. However, I believe that back then the aficionados were much more tolerant than nowadays, and so were the artists. When\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFVuelve-lo-de-la-Llave-del-Cante\/c112t\/563987c60cf275e9c596a72e\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0awarded in Madrid the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Golden Key of Cante<\/a>\u00a0to Manuel Vallejo in 1926, no one complained that a prize was given to someone with such a voice. Yet, when the Key was awarded to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>\u00a0almost ninety years later (2005),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>\u00a0wondered out loud how was it possible that the Key of Cante had been awarded to a mute person.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there is hope, because there is a legion of young aficionados who, maybe because these are times of greater musical culture and better education, experience flamenco in a different way and are more tolerant. Perhaps they have understood that this art is better enjoyed when opening up to other tastes, instead of being close-minded. Even the young artists themselves are more open-minded. As an example, it\u2019s remarkable to witness the fellowship and camaraderie of\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Reyes-y-Periquin\/c112t\/56aa9db50cf205a1e8531fed\">Antonio Reyes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino Chico<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/08\/29\/Pedro-el-Grana%C3%Adno\">Pedro el Grana\u00edno<\/a>, or Arc\u00e1ngel and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFEs-Miguel-Poveda-un-cantaor-discutido\/c112t\/56aaefe60cf205a1e853fbda\">Miguel Poveda<\/a>. Regarding\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>, we have the great relationships between\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Estrella-Morente-Tangos-del-Cerro\/c112t\/55f780ac0cf2de902a86ab99\">Estrella Morente<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/08\/31\/Marina-Heredia-Morentangos\">Marina Heredia<\/a>, or Mayte Mart\u00edn and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Esperanza-Fern%C3%A1ndez\/c112t\/576395670cf2c6c572676c67\">Esperanza Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a>. Artists must lead by example, because they exert a great influence (positive or negative) among their followers. I don\u2019t want to use myself as an example, but very early on, at 17 when I was getting started with flamenco, I decided that variety was the spice of life. I set aside prejudices and for forty years I have been enjoying\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, all types of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, sang by anyone who knows how to sing, above any flamenco ideology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
