However, today I need to write about myself, to tell something that I have sometimes pointed out and that many people already know. I am a failed\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>. Failed, but a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, nonetheless. As the great Manuel Centeno once said, tired of the dictatorship of\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>: \u201cI am a good\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but I don\u2019t have a nice voice, I don\u2019t have a powerful voice, and I have no duende\u201d. I know a thing or two about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but who cares about this? Who cares about jondo wisdom? In the old times, knowledge was something truly appreciated, but these days what really matters is the fa\u00e7ade, the wardrobe, the stage, the graceful footwork, the Facebook pic.<\/p>\n<p>I was born in the wrong century. I\u2019m more 1800s, like Nitri or Frijones or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-m%C3%A9dico-del-cante-jondo\/c112t\/56fb55960cf20a08ed0b1678\">Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0used to sing for the fishes (barbels, specifically); I sing for the olive trees. El Mellizo used to go to churches in C\u00e1diz to cool down and to listen to the priests singing; I lock myself in my den with the lights off, knocking my knuckles on the desk,\u00a0<i>marcando comp\u00e1s<\/i>, remembering those who sang because they needed to express their emotions.<\/p>\n<p>In my room, there is a plaster bust of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0wearing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u2019s flat cap, and a photograph of Pepe Torres that his daughter Tomasa had at her home. There are hundreds of books, yellowish due to age and nicotine. Old anthologies. The knife that (possibly) immortalized El Canario. A scarf that belonged to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>. Two of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Siete-a%C3%B1os-sin-Mario-Maya\/c112t\/5604c1250cf2375d99dbfea0\">Mario Maya<\/a>\u2019s dance outfits. Manuscripts by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/26\/Centenario-de-Ricardo-Molina\">Ricardo Molina<\/a>\u00a0and letters of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>. Two little combs which belonged to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>\u2019s dance boots. A piece of a cross that Joselito El Gallo bought for his mother, Gabriela Ortega Feria, when she died. Old sepia-coloured photographs, zealously kept in a box of\u00a0<i>La Estepe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0biscuits. A record by Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, the one with\u00a0<i>Rieniego<\/i>, which Pastora and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pinto<\/a>\u00a0used to hug when they missed him (which was almost every day). Marchena\u2019s Italian hand-made shoes. One original photograph of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>\u00a0by Benito Moreno. A voice mail from F\u00e9lix Grande telling me he felt moved by a story about my grandfather. Some tapes where Ram\u00f3n Medrano,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Sanl\u00facar, talks about the\u00a0<i>giliana<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>Mirris cante<\/i>s (the \u201csmall one\u201d and the \u201cbig one\u201d), among a hundred other things.<\/p>\n<p>To be a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0is also to love the things of those who passed away. A frustrated\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, yes. Tormented and powerless against a\u00a0<i>tercio seguireyo<\/i>\u00a0of the Marruros (an awfully difficult creation of those dirty-poor gypsies of Jerez who sang in the\u00a0<i>tabancos<\/i>\u00a0and tenement courtyards of Santiago or San Miguel).\u00a0<i>Cantaor<\/i>\u00a0with a charmless and graceless voice, with no gift for art or beauty, yet a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0nonetheless. Dreamer of impossible parties, of chimerical\u00a0<i>mano-a-manos<\/i>\u00a0and flamenco binges that are only real in my imagination.\u00a0<i>Cantaor<\/i>, for sure. Full of shame, shy, of those who close their eyes, so we don\u2019t see those who don\u2019t know we close them to look inside us, deep where there\u2019s a fusion of sensibility, pain, jealousy, passion, love, bitterness, fortune and misfortune, the taste of wine, the scent of roses and jasmines in dented flower beds of old yards.\u00a0<i>Cantaor<\/i>, sure.
