{"id":5651,"date":"2018-01-30T16:41:39","date_gmt":"2018-01-30T16:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/aquel-chino-de-malaga\/"},"modified":"2019-03-17T10:19:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T09:19:50","slug":"that-chino-de-malaga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/that-chino-de-malaga\/","title":{"rendered":"That Chino de M\u00e1laga"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"blog-content\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Finally, there will be a public tribute (I\u2019m unaware if any other has taken place recently) honoring Jos\u00e9 Manuel Ruiz Sosa,\u00a0<i><a>El Chino<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from M\u00e1laga whom I knew and admired by what he was, a brilliant artists with a unique style and a talent as a composer that has never been properly acknowledged, even less so while he was alive. As soon as he died, on September 26, 1997, in Benalm\u00e1dena (province of M\u00e1laga), he started to be acclaimed as a creator.<\/p>\n<p>I first met him in the 1990s, in a AVE (high-speed train) in my way to Madrid, to present the\u00a0<i>Semana Flamenca de \u00c1vila<\/i>, a week-long flamenco event where El Chino was going to take part. I talked to him about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and immediately I realized that he was different from the others, a a talented artist with clear ideas who admired\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0as much as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>. He had the attitude of those artists who were famous when he was a child (the ones named above among them). He never criticized anyone because, as he told me, anyone who succeeds, it\u2019s for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling with us that day was a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Seville who decided to criticize in a bad way Enrique Morente, and El Chino stopped him on his tracks. \u201cI won\u2019t allow you to criticize a colleague in front of me, much less when he\u2019s unable to speak in his defense\u201d, he told him. I was amazed by that, and since I really admired that master from Granada, that piqued my interest in this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from the Perchel district of M\u00e1laga, the birthplace of La Pirula, La Repompa and other famous artists of M\u00e1laga, \u201c<i>M\u00e1laga La Cantaora<\/i>\u201d as the poet Manuel Machado would call it.<\/p>\n<p>The father of El Chino was Chiquito del Perchel, but he was raised by the guitarist Juan el Africano. His mother, La Blanca, was also\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>, so El Chino grew up in a supportive artistic environment, something that would show whenever people talked to him. He also believed that M\u00e1laga\u2019s role hadn\u2019t been fairly acknowledged in flamenco, as that province had been the birthplace of great artists and had also contributed styles, specific\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0and variants of those\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>He was young, barely a teenager, when he started performing in\u00a0<i>tablaos<\/i>\u00a0and parties in Madrid, where he would either sing for\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0or play the guitar. Rafael Romero\u00a0<i>El Gallina<\/i>, told me one evening that when El Chino started to get renown, he wasn\u2019t understood by the aficionados, because even as he sang in the traditional way, like Valderrama, with an spectacular voice, sometimes he would stray from the established standards. Creators start making noise early on.<\/p>\n<p>When he created\u00a0<i>Arte-4<\/i>\u00a0in 1978, those who were following him since his childhood thought he would totally quit traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but he never did. Enrique Morente once talked to me about that period in El Chino\u2019s career, when he flirted with more commercial\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but always pointed out that he was \u201camazing, whatever he sings\u201d. Indeed, he had superb skill, a perfect tune, a prodigious melodic arc, tons of comp\u00e1s and, above all, creative talent.<\/p>\n<p>When people talk about\u00a0<i>nuevo flamenco<\/i>, few mention this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Perchel, who was ahead of most artists, perhaps because he grew up among creators and knew how to keep an open mindset. As he enjoyed the greatest success, having regained his reputation as\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and earned the respect of even the most purist aficionados, he died when he was 43 years old, too young. He died of a heart attack. That\u2019s how the celebrated Chino de M\u00e1laga left us, a hard blow from the grim reaper, leaving us with a good but little-known discography, and the memory of a kind, polite man and a good friend.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, he was one of the great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of his time, although I confess I got to know him a little late. That is, as a person. Yet, that didn\u2019t prevent me from getting to know him well and admire him. I celebrate this tribute to his memory that will take place in Benalm\u00e1dena on May 11 and 12th. It\u2019s only fair.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
