{"id":5641,"date":"2018-02-11T16:33:44","date_gmt":"2018-02-11T16:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/ser-o-no-ser-gitano\/"},"modified":"2019-03-16T20:35:29","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T19:35:29","slug":"to-be-or-not-to-be-gypsy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/to-be-or-not-to-be-gypsy\/","title":{"rendered":"To be or not to be Gypsy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty years ago, I met someone who never told me that his mother was a Gypsy and his father\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9<\/i>, that is, non-Gypsy. Was he ashamed of his background? After a few years, this person started to make a living off flamenco (although he wasn\u2019t an artist), and then he boasted of being as Gypsy as the legendary Chorrojumo. Now he hides the fact that his father was a\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0and refers to other Gypsies he\u2019s only met in the social networks as \u201cuncle\u201d or \u201ccousin\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At this time and age, in the 21st century, we should have no doubt that flamenco is an Andalusian art form created by Andalusians, even as some people have been for several years telling us, without offering any evidence, that it came from elsewhere. If they keep on it, they\u2019ll end up convincing us that the\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>\u00a0is not Andalusian at all, because, apparently, all\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0of flamenco originated from outside Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written in other occasions that when flamenco started to be performed in theaters, caf\u00e9s and parties, it was already a fully-developed art form, not something that was still taking shape. That is, it was entirely formed, with well-defined styles and schools, and its performers were not only Gypsies, but also Castillian or Andalusian (I don\u2019t like to use the term\u00a0<i>payo<\/i>\u00a0because it\u2019s a derogatory word). The majority of the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>who sang in the dance academies of Manuel and Miguel Barrera, Maestro F\u00e9lix Moreno and others we not Gypsies, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>, Lorente, Perea del Puerto, Ram\u00f3n Sartorio or El Peinero.<\/p>\n<p>How come were they able to learn\u00a0<i>cante gitano<\/i>, if the Gypsies of Triana supposedly didn\u2019t allow any non-Gypsy in their parties, according to some writers such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/10\/Fernando-el-de-Triana\">Fernando el de Triana<\/a>? It\u2019s a mystery. I disagree with this idea that\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9s<\/i>\u00a0weren\u2019t allowed in Gypsy parties, because I came across an 1841 account about a Gypsy baptism celebration in Triana, where the writer was able to join in and tell it all. Incidentally, that account was the basis for Est\u00e9banez Calder\u00f3n\u2019s article \u201c<i>Baile en Triana<\/i>\u201d, published in newspapers in 1842, perhaps as a retort to the author of the original account.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the information available about the origins of flamenco, some\u00a0<i>gitanistas<\/i>\u00a0keep insisting that it has been culturally appropriated by\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9s<\/i>. I remember one day when I visited\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0at his house in Seville to show him a collection of ten flamenco albums that had just been released,\u00a0<i>Los Ases del Cante Flamenco<\/i>, published by Pepe Carrasco, author of flamenco lyrics and collector of old slate records.<\/p>\n<p>Mairena checked out the albums, putting away those he wasn\u2019t interested in: Cepero,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>, Ni\u00f1o de la Huerta,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>\u00a0and others. He only cared about the records of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and El Gloria, both Gypsies. I asked him why he didn\u2019t bother with the others, and he told me: \u201cbecause they have nothing to do with us\u201d. What the master meant was that they didn\u2019t had anything to do with him and his mindset, even as he thought of me as part of his Gypsy-Andalusian brotherhood.<\/p>\n<p>It really annoys me when I see the inferiority complex of some\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9s<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>payos<\/i>\u00a0regarding the matter of whether flamenco is Gypsy or not, or the other way around. Some\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0try making excuses for not having the so-called \u201cflamenco voice\u201d, having a more melodic or high-pitched voice. As if only one type of voice were acceptable in flamenco, as if it were obligatory having it rough and deep. That is the result of a racist creed, the creed of the\u00a0<i>gitanistas<\/i>, who have been trying to convince us that non-Gypsy\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is not true\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but folklore instead.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why that person who first tried to hide his Gypsy mother, now tries to hide his\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0father, because he currently lives off flamenco. Being Gypsy is not as essential as some people think, either to sing flamenco or to feel it. This is a conclusion I reached many years ago, not because I just woke up one day thinking I would make my mind up, but as the result of over forty years researching flamenco. When it comes to enjoying flamenco, all its\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and its different styles, I only think of how wonderful Andalusia is, with all its people inside, wherever they come from, and regardless of their occupation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
