I\u2019m asking you this because it\u2019s something that has been talked about for years: people say that flamenco has reached the end of an era, and that it will be hard for new artists to match those of the last four or five decades.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Let\u2019s see Manolito. I\u2019ve lived through golden ages in flamenco that I thought would never be surpassed, and then they were. The problem is to compare today\u2019s artists with all the big stars through the whole history of flamenco, because the present will always be at a disadvantage. Yet, that\u2019s something we do often. We would say \u201cThere are no longer big stars of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u2026\u201d and we make a list of all the greatest artists in a century and a half of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Don\u2019t get sidetracked, grandpa, are we at the end of an era or not?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-We\u2019re always at the end of an era. I remember when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>, Marchena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/05\/12\/Canalejas-de-Puerto-Real\">Canalejas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Matilde-la-trabajadora\/c112t\/578318380cf2f626feb1af85\">Matilde Coral<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>\u00a0all started to get old, people would say \u201cwhen these are gone, that would be the end of it\u201d. Then came Fosforito,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/16\/Aquel-sello-de-Mar%C3%ADa-Vargas\">Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/a>, Morente, Camar\u00f3n,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-soledad-de-Manolo-Sanl%C3%BAcar\/c112t\/566a47510cf2391068765f14\">Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuela-Carrasco\/c112t\/569858210cf2e94e3fb86b22eady?\">Manuela Carrasco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Siete-a%C3%B1os-sin-Mario-Maya\/c112t\/5604c1250cf2375d99dbfea0\">Mario Maya<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yes grandpa, but some of these are now gone, and the few left will eventually be gone, too. There\u2019s no one to take over.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Other artists will take over, although they may not be of your liking.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jos%C3%A9-Merc%C3%A9-y-Diego-del-Morao\/c112t\/577347be0cf2bcae6e428352\">Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-Pele\/c112t\/577f24a20cf2a27045f18292\">El Pele<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mayte-Mart%C3%ADn-desconcertante-y-libre\/c112t\/5624632a0cf2c6c6437c0ce8\">Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/03\/31\/Juan-Manuel-Ca%C3%B1izares-Goyescas\">Ca\u00f1izares<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Vicente-Amigo\/c112t\/569587c40cf20ee37c7115e6\">Vicente Amigo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/20\/Rafael-Riqueni\">Riqueni<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Eva-La-Yerbabuena-Alegrias\/c112t\/5618655c0cf2a7ff73aaf749\">La Yerbabuena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/12\/14\/Farruquito-y-Juan-Ram%C3%Adrez\">Farruquito<\/a>\u00a0are all great artists. Although it\u2019s true that in those years there were about forty great stars, and nowadays just about twelve.<\/p>\n<p><b>-You forgot to mention Rosal\u00eda&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Stop trying to be funny, kid, because I take this very seriously. That girl belongs to the next generation, those who sing without singing.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What do you mean, Grandpa, to sing without singing?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-To fake out, to play a trick.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Ah, OK, got it<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Note how\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0has evolved since recording technology has existed. Listen to how it was at the end of the 19th century, in the first decades of the following century, in the 1950s and 1960s, and now. It has become more simplified, through a technical evolution that favours the easy way. In my opinion,\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0has been weakened. I mean\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>, because there are other ways to sing Andalusian music. When people say that nowadays\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, toque and baile is better than ever, that\u2019s not true. Technique may have improved (among other things because we now have better resources), but\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0itself hasn\u2019t become any better. Note how well Chac\u00f3n,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>\u00a0sang, at a time when they basically had to stick their heads inside a trumpet to do a recording. Also note how well Trini Espa\u00f1a and Farruco danced.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Maybe you\u2019re just stuck in the past, and only like the things from your own time?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-This time is also my time, because I\u2019m still alive and I still listen to\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. It\u2019s true that I have a tendency to idealize my golden age, but I lived those years as much as I\u2019m living the present, and the difference is like black and white.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Grandpa, is bad flamenco being promoted, while authentic flamenco is being discarded?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-I wouldn\u2019t go that far, but you have a point. Why do you think that some national newspapers promote so heavily the\u00a0<i>marvelous<\/i>\u00a0Rosal\u00eda? On top of the financial interests (as sometimes the reviews are paid for, openly or not), they think that thousands of young people have an interest in her, while this is not true. How can possibly a woman without a good voice, who doesn\u2019t know how to sing, \u201crevolutionize\u201d an art such as flamenco? Yet, since the masses have no clue, they believe it. And there she is, filling up venues and selling albums.<\/p>\n<p><b>-You seem burned out, grandpa.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-As burned out as a stick in a bonfire.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet, artists like her not only have the support of national newspapers and magazines, but also of prestigious critics and writers. Maybe you are the one who gets it wrong, grandpa.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Maybe, but I can tell you that I definitely feel flabbergasted whenever when I read positive reviews about Rosal\u00eda, because she\u2019s weak, really weak. Maybe I\u2019m unable to see what others see or hear what they hear. Maybe that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What will we have for lunch today?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Rice with shrimp.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I\u2019m getting tired of the rice.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
