Certainly, this artist has the right to sing whatever she feels like, among other things because she sings wonderfully. Yet, if she releases an album of non-flamenco songs, why is that she has so much coverage in the flamenco media? I don\u2019t get it. Just because she\u2019s a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>, do people have to give an opinion about anything she does, even if she decides to set up a circus? I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p>I remember when, several years ago, she sang at the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Sevilla<\/i>\u00a0in the Lope de Vega theater, filled to capacity, in her show\u00a0<i>Alc\u00e1ntaraManuel<\/i>\u00a0, which had nothing to do with flamenco. Dozens of aficionados from my hometown, Arahal, took a bus to attend it, yet they all left before the show ended. Me too. They left the coliseum at the\u00a0<i>Casino de la Exposici\u00f3n<\/i>because they felt ripped off, and they were right. Fooled, indeed, because the show was super boring.<\/p>\n<p>She got upset with me a few days ago because I said that she had chosen the easy way. I\u2019m not saying that writing songs is easy, but it\u2019s hard to leave a good flamenco discography, something she doesn\u2019t have yet. The fact that she doesn\u2019t think this is important doesn\u2019t meant it isn\u2019t, because today we assess the great masters of the past according the discography they left behind. I\u2019m referring to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>. It\u2019s true that Marchena sang a few non-flamenco songs too, yet the thick of his discography was\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>\u00a0, and that\u2019s what made him a legendary artist.<\/p>\n<p>I get that with her new album,\u00a0<i>Tempo Rubato<\/i>\u00a0, this\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0from Barcelona will have a media coverage that she would never have if she were releasing an album of\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0. She\u2019s getting lots of coverage already, and I\u2019m happy for her because I like and admire Mayte and I wish her the best. What I don\u2019t get is the coverage in the flamenco media, as if they owed something to this singer-<i>cantaora<\/i>. I also don\u2019t get the flamenco purists who cheer and celebrate this particular album, because they are the same people who criticize anyone who adds musical arrangements to a\u00a0<i>ca\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0or a\u00a0<i>jabera<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>The field of flamenco critic has been mortally wounded for years, due to several reasons. First, since it\u2019s not a well-paid job, just anyone can do it, whether or not they know what they\u2019re talking about. Second, because some media organizations avoid criticizing anyone (since all they care about is selling), so they avoid any conflict with record companies. And third, because there are very few flamenco critics left, and instead there are lots of fans of certain successful artists. I\u2019ve seen in theaters some of them loudly cheering performers who aren\u2019t even worth to sing in family reunions.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry to say that Mayte Martin has disappointed me a bit, even as she couldn\u2019t care less about it, which is fine, because artists must always do what they feel like doing. In my opinion, she\u2019s one of the best voices of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and one of its best minds, and perhaps that is why it hurts so much that she has given up flamenco, which is what made her famous. Yet, she\u2019s quite critical about some things done in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. There is some incoherence about it, no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s why I still like the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0who died miserably singing flamenco, the right way.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Original photo by Miguel Mesa<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
