These are aficionados who never go to theaters,\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0or festivals, yet they keep in their homes thousands of flamenco tapes, albums and books, never leaving their rooms. Their walls are usually stacked with photographs of their favorite artists, and they often keep a barrel of sherry on a Sevillian table with polka-dotted chairs.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet, these are a minority, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-For sure, maybe a few hundred in all of Spain, because most aficionados go to theaters, festivals or recitals in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Frankly, I think that those homebound aficionados are quite happy in their homes enjoying their records. I do that too. My house is a big flamenco archive and, even as I go to theaters because I like to, and because it\u2019s part of my job, whenever I play a record of\u00a0<a>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a>Manuel Vallejo<\/a>, I get a glass of sherry and forget about the clock. So I really have nothing against the homebound aficionados.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Me neither. Besides, since I\u2019m an old man, I don\u2019t leave the house often and I enjoy listening to\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0at home everyday. These days I\u2019ve been researching a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who has been all but forgotten, although in his days he was rather famous. I\u2019m talking about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from the Macarena district of Sevile.\u00a0<i>El Pinto<\/i>, who got that nickname after his mother\u00a0<i>La Pinta<\/i>, was a child prodigy of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, who made quite stir when he performed at\u00a0<i>Caf\u00e9 Novedades<\/i>\u00a0in the 1910s. He would sing in the surrounding towns with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Recordando-a-El-Carbonerillo\/c112t\/56b81aa40cf2dc1600e907a6\">El Carbonerillo<\/a>, and occasionally with Ni\u00f1o de la Huerta, and people would rather skip work than miss their performances.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Why has he been forgotten, grandpa? Well, I reckon that\u2019s not easy to figure out, yet the flamencologists haven\u2019t bothered to check out his discography, which is a treasure. Do you think that\u2019s because he was the husband of\u00a0<a>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Not really, although, in a way, yes. El Pinto had several, very distinctive periods. Like I said, he was a child prodigy. Yet, when he was just a teenager, he left the stages to become a croupier, that is, a professional dealer in a casino. When the government banned gambling, he started performing again, and aficionados all over Spain would fight over the slate records he recorded with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>\u00a0in the 1920s. At that time, his stage name was\u00a0<i>Pepito El Pinto<\/i>. When he was a top-earning performer at the height of his career, he married La Ni\u00f1a, in 1933 at La Macarena district, and from then on, his obsession was to make her succeed in every way, because he adored her, as a woman and as an artist. He also greatly admired her brother, Tom\u00e1s, who was his idol. Yet, he ended up neglecting his own singing career. When Pastora quit performing, after the failure of her tour\u00a0<i>Espa\u00f1a y su cantaora<\/i>\u00a0(1949), he decided to revive his career, but by then he was more a businessman than an artist. That\u2019s the rough story of this brilliant\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, the son of La Pinta who did so many good things for Seville, the city that forgot him.<\/p>\n<p><b>-How was El Pinto, as a person?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Wonderful. A good man in the widest sense of the word. He was quite a character, too. Once, he wanted to build a house in Chipiona, and bought a lot which had once been a cemetery. You can imagine Pastora\u2019s face when he announced: \u201cPastora, I just bought a cemetery in Chipiona!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>-Grandpa, good chat about the homebound aficionado thing. What\u2019s for lunch?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Rice and eggs, it\u2019s quite healthy.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What about the seabass I\u2019ve been craving for?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-With my pension, you\u2019ll eat seabass once you make a bigger contribution to the family\u2019s finances. You\u2019re flat broke.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So mean.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
