I say \u201cflamenco\u201d because this is the topic we\u2019re dealing with, but I could say the same about many other things. Yet, who has the right to criticize those who sing, dance or play the guitar just because they like to?<\/p>\n<p>Another story is when some people get on a stage and do not perform at an acceptable level, although whenever someone gets on a stage, it\u2019s because they\u2019ve been asked to. Frankly, I believe that flamenco is in great danger of becoming ruined for this very reason, because the quality of flamenco nowadays is really pitiful, and the stages should be reserved only for those with knowledge and talent.<\/p>\n<p>I am a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, I mean, I sing as an aficionado and understand\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0as well as the best\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>. However, one day I realized that I was not good for\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0for many reasons, among them the fact that I\u2019m exceedingly shy. Besides, I don\u2019t have the gift of art, I lack\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>. Yet, how come I could figure this out, but others couldn\u2019t? Indeed, some\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0sing terribly, yet they keep getting on stages, even for free. Stages in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0and festivals, and they even get paid, occasionally. It\u2019s true that everyone is free to do as they wish, and that life is hard sometimes, but this has become so ridiculous that I don\u2019t understand how come we don\u2019t put an end to it. Either we are serious and responsible, or flamenco is doomed.<\/p>\n<p>Is it necessary to be gifted to perform flamenco? Definitely yes. Even to feel it. Not everyone is able to feel any emotion listening to flamenco. Sometimes, particularly at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>, I see thousands of people giving a standing ovation to a\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0performance which sincerely didn\u2019t deserve any clapping. Typically, this happens when the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0employ theatrics and do circus acts with their voices. The louder the screams, the most applause. In\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, the trick is to do a lot of footwork and handwork, and in guitar, to do\u00a0<i>picados<\/i>\u00a0like crazy, of course.<\/p>\n<p>The other day Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo criticized the concept of \u201cpurity\u201d in flamenco, which is not surprising since many years ago he published the book\u00a0<i>La pureza es un camelo<\/i>\u00a0(\u201c<i>Purity is a hoax<\/i>\u201d). In my opinion, that much talked-about concept of\u00a0<i>pureza flamenca<\/i>\u00a0does indeed have to do a lot with this gift thing.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0had that purity no matter what she sang, because she had the gift. The same goes for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/veinte-anos-sin-el-gran-antonio\">Antonio el Bailar\u00edn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n de la Isla<\/a>, whether they sang, danced or played the guitar. One\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0is not \u201cpure\u201d just by itself, by according to who performs it.<\/p>\n<p>What does a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>\u00a0have to do with mixing? I bring this up because that\u2019s what people point out when saying that flamenco is not \u201cpure\u201d, but rather the result of a mix of music and cultures. That\u2019s absolutely true, in flamenco and in many other art forms.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the financial aspect. Do you have any idea of how much money is spent on artists (or whatever they are) in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>, festivals and cultural events, where they bore everyone to tears? I also include here the contests.
