{"id":5564,"date":"2018-03-20T17:06:58","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T17:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/un-saetero-monumental\/"},"modified":"2019-03-14T00:54:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T23:54:40","slug":"a-first-class-saetero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/a-first-class-saetero\/","title":{"rendered":"A first-class saetero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the season of\u00a0<i>saetas<\/i>\u00a0is around the corner, I\u2019d like to remember here one of the great\u00a0<i>saeteros<\/i>\u00a0(singer of\u00a0<i>saetas<\/i>) in history:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Mairena\/c112t\/57aa63f70cf2cb1cfffd7c63\">Manuel Mairena<\/a>, the younger brother of the great\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Mairena\/c112t\/55f74f7c0cf2de902a868807\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>. He was not just a\u00a0<i>saetero<\/i>, but a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>well-versed in many different\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>, such as\u00a0<i>soleares, seguiriyas, ton\u00e1s, romances<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>. He was also born in Mairena del Alcor, in 1934, during Spain\u2019s Second Republic, and was his brother\u2019s follower.<\/p>\n<p>When Manuel was born, his brother Antonio (25 years his senior), wasn\u2019t yet a great star of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, even as he had been performing since he was a child. Thus, Manuel Cruz Garc\u00eda, Manuel Mairena had in his own home his main reference in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, Antonio, besides his other two brothers, Juan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/03\/20\/Manuel-Mairena\">Curro Mairena<\/a>. His father Rafael Cruz Vargas was also a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0aficionado, related to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, and a blacksmith by trade, born in another town in Seville province, El Coronil. Since the town of Mairena del Alcor was already well known for its great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and knowledgeable aficionados, we can say that Manolo was born in a very fertile land.<\/p>\n<p>Did being the brother of Antonio Mairena benefit or harm his career? I bring this question up because both points of view are often stated. Without a doubt, it benefited him at the start of his career, because when he started to perform, in the 1940s, Antonio was already a professional singer and he helped Manuel to get into the trade. It\u2019s possible that, after a while, being associated with Antonio harmed his career, as many people would make loathsome comparisons, wanting them to compete against each other, in Mairena and beyond. We must be absolutely sincere in one thing: Manolo never had the same talent as his brother, even as his voice was more pleasant to the ears and one of the most beautiful in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, in my opinion. I know that it\u2019s a matter of personal tastes, but, objectively, Antonio was better, besides being his teacher, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Antonio and Manolo loved each other because they were brothers and grew up together, yet they also had their quarrels and rivalries (something well known in Mairena and beyond), for several reasons. For example, because sometimes Antonio would pick other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0above his own brother, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/a>. Not to mention\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fosforito\/c112t\/5674793c0cf203da56e4658c\">Fosforito<\/a>, whom Mairena always held in high regard, a fully reciprocated admiration. I remember that shortly after Antonio Mairena passed away, Manuel performed a recital in Mairena\u2019s\u00a0<i>Sal\u00f3n Tomisa<\/i>, with the venue packed. That night he said two or three things which revealed his inner thoughts, such as, for instance, claiming that the\u00a0<i>Golden Key of Cante<\/i>\u00a0award belonged to him, \u201cby inheritance\u201d. He also mentioned how his brother had never worked at the family\u2019s forge because he was \u201csickly\u201d. The fact is that Manolo didn\u2019t quite measure his words when he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Since it was impossible for him to surpass his brother\u2019s reputation, Manuel found in the\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>\u00a0what he was looking for: becoming renowned for something more than just being the brother of one of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of that time, Antonio Mairena. Thus, he became a superb\u00a0<i>saetero<\/i>, even better than his own brother, which was quite a feat because Mairena was a\u00a0<i>saetero<\/i>\u00a0of impressive quality, a disciple of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Torres-Saeta\/c112t\/56f1c8930cf23c800acf7fd3\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and Rafael Ramos El Gloria. Manolo knew that in that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, at least, he was not only as good as his brother, but he could also \u201cshow him how it was done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When Manolo recorded his album\u00a0<i>Via crucis<\/i>\u00a0(1997), we were not in speaking terms, as he was upset with me on account of some reviews I had written. Even so, as I liked his\u00a0<i>cante por saetas<\/i>\u00a0so much (in fact, I also liked his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0in many other\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>), I wrote about that album and I stated something he liked a lot. He phoned me at home and told me: \u201cI\u2019m upset with you, as you know, but what you wrote today in the\u00a0<i>El Correo<\/i>newspaper is something I have been waiting for many years, and I thank you very much for that\u201d. I had written about his importance as\u00a0<i>saetero<\/i>, because it was only fair to say that, performing such a difficult\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>, Manolo was not just \u201cAntonio\u2019s brother\u201d, but himself,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/03\/20\/Manuel-Mairena\">Manuel Mairena, a first-class\u00a0<i>saetero<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
