Right away, I thought about something pending that we wanted to find out: whether a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0murdered in Valencia in 1889, Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez y Calvo, was the same person as\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>. There is no question that the woman murdered in Valencia was a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>. Whether, as Gelardo claimed, she was\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>, the famous\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0who achieved great success performing at Caf\u00e9 Burrero, is less likely. I discussed this matter with him and he asked me to forward any information I was able to gather about this, but I put this project on hold, among other things because it never crossed my mind that my good friend would die so soon.<\/p>\n<p>The only poster showing \u201cConcepci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aranda (a)\u00a0<i>La Cartagenera<\/i>\u201d, just like that, was published in my book\u00a0<i>El Cartel maldito<\/i>\u00a0about the life and death of Juan Reyes Osuna\u00a0<i>El Canario<\/i>. When Gelardo saw that poster, he called me and told me he had started to doubt whether the\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0murdered in Valencia was in fact\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>, because in that poster this artist shows up as \u201cConcepci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aranda\u201d, that is Pe\u00f1aranda as her surname, not as a stage name (which shows up as\u00a0<i>La Cartagenera<\/i>\u00a0instead). Interestingly, whoever made that historic poster didn\u2019t make any mistakes with any of the other artists featured, and I wonder why they would have made a mistake precisely with this artist.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that the actual name of\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>\u00a0was \u201cConcepci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aranda\u201d and not \u201cConcepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez\u201d, and that the latter, murdered in Valencia, was a different artist. Fernando el de Triana wrote about\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>\u00a0in his book\u00a0<i>Arte y artistas Flamencos<\/i>\u00a0(Madrid, 1935), and he referred to her as\u00a0<i>La Cartagenera<\/i>, as it\u2019s written in that poster. If the famous\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>\u00a0had been murdered, wouldn\u2019t Fernando have told us about it, like he did with\u00a0<i>El Canario<\/i>? He would have certainly done so, because this writer from Triana had attended her performances, and according to what he wrote about her, it\u2019s obvious that he admired her as an artist. Likewise, N\u00fa\u00f1ez del Prado wrote about\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>\u00a0in his book\u00a0<i>Cantaores andaluces<\/i>\u00a0(1904), and it\u2019s noteworthy that he didn\u2019t say anything about her tragic death, considering how prone he was to lurid details.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>\u00a0vanished from the historical record in the 1880s, but this also happened with many\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>. Jos\u00e9 Gelardo was unable to find in M\u00e1laga the birth certificate of Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez y Calvo, the unfortunate\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0murdered in Valencia. I managed to find it, and this is the main information that appears in the document:<\/p>\n<p>Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez y Calvo, daughter of Rafael Rodr\u00edguez D\u00edaz and Agustina Calvo Delgado. The girl was born on December 31, 1863, on 74 Lagunillas street in M\u00e1laga. Interestingly, her maternal grandmother was from Cartagena, so there is the possibility that Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez got the stage name\u00a0<i>La Cartagenera<\/i>after her grandmother. However, I think that the fact that the poster shows Concepci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aranda\u00a0<i>La Cartagenera<\/i>\u00a0(not Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez) settles the matter as to whether they were the same person or not. So, which of them was the celebrated Concha\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>I think it would be very odd if Concepci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez, from M\u00e1laga, was\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>, because why would she get \u201cPe\u00f1aranda\u201d as a stage name, if that surname doesn\u2019t show up as any of her parents\u2019 or grandparents\u2019 surnames? Thus, like I told Jos\u00e9 Gelardo, I\u2019m absolutely certain that the\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0murdered in Valencia was Concha<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0<i>La Cantaora<\/i>, who apparently was the sister of Ni\u00f1o de San Roque. The real, authentic\u00a0<i>La Pe\u00f1aranda<\/i>was Concepci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aranda, the one who shows up in the 1885 poster, alongside El Canario de \u00c1lora, El Canario Chico, La Serrana, Antonio el Pintor, Lamparilla and La Carbonera, among other famous artists.<\/p>\n<p>I promise to shed light soon on this mystery as a tribute to my dear friend Jos\u00e9 Gelardo, who wrote about this celebrated artist in 2007, in his great book about\u00a0<i>El Rojo el Alpargatero<\/i>. I don\u2019t mean to call him out, less so after his death, but rather to fulfil my promise of sorting out a matter he lost a lot of sleep over.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0Translation note: \u201cConcha\u201d is a common Spanish nickname for \u201cConcepci\u00f3n\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Translated by P.
