Same with\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and guitar, but particularly in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. Since I\u2019m old, sixty already, and I\u2019ve seen performances by geniuses of\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Farruco<\/a>, Enrique el Cojo,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Matilde-Coral-y-Rafael-El-Negro\/c112t\/57199be00cf25351a37dba74\">Rafael el Negro<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/08\/Fernanda-Romero\">Fernanda Romero<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Matilde-Coral-y-Rafael-El-Negro\/c112t\/57199be00cf25351a37dba74\">Matilde Coral<\/a>, among many others. I\u2019m a big fan of that generation influenced by\u00a0<i>maestra<\/i>\u00a0Matilde, with names such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Milagros-Meng%C3%ADbar\/c112t\/5750eccb0cf2b2ec517bc3d7\">Milagros Meng\u00edbar<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepa-Montes\/c112t\/5750ec860cf245cf719deb1a\">Pepa Montes<\/a>, Ana Mar\u00eda Bueno, Carmen Montiel, Roc\u00edo Loreto,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Carmen-Ledesma\/c112t\/5750f0800cf2a5fcbcc65df6\">Carmen Ledesma<\/a>\u00a0and many others. I think that if we add\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Angelita-Vargas\/c112t\/56cf4c930cf26bd1d3eef96e\">Angelita Vargas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuela-Carrasco\/c112t\/569858210cf2e94e3fb86b22eady?\">Manuela Carrasco<\/a>\u00a0to the mix, it\u2019s a generation hard to surpass.<\/p>\n<p>The reason I like traditional\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0is because they learned their trade well and they execute all the exercises of each\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>:\u00a0<i>soleares, seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>alegr\u00edas<\/i>. The younger generation, however, is a free for all, rushing their performance so the spectators are unable to see the whole picture, with every detail, which is how true\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0should be done. In this respect there is a\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0who captivated me several decades ago: Milagros Meng\u00edbar, from Triana, with roots in C\u00e1diz belonging to that generation influenced by the great\u00a0<i>maestra<\/i>\u00a0from Seville, Matilde Coral. That is, by the so-called and glorious Seville school.<\/p>\n<p>When Milagros dances\u00a0<i>por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, with her\u00a0<i>bata de cola<\/i>, which she moves like Vel\u00e1zquez moved his paint brushes, it\u2019s always a lesson in\u00a0<i>danza jonda<\/i>, with its\u00a0<i>entradas<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>salidas<\/i>, its\u00a0<i>llamadas, marcajes, desplantes, escobillas, idas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>coletillas<\/i>. And always, always dancing the guitar\u2019s\u00a0<i>falsetas<\/i>\u00a0with a captivating hand movement, giving a space for the cantaor and to each verse. Then there are those silent moments of hers, like the ones at the Maestranza bullring. Everything, together, is a masterpiece, what we call mastery, which is something not within reach of everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I see Milagros dance it seems as if I were watching La Giralda wearing her\u00a0<i>bata de cola<\/i>, walking around Seville, sometimes going to Caf\u00e9 Burrero, others to Sal\u00f3n Novedades. Sadly, this has become increasingly unusual, because good\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, like everything good, like good\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and good guitar, is vanishing. It\u2019s true that nowadays there is a good bunch of great\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>, well-prepared artists who come up with amazing productions. It\u2019s also true that new paths for dance expression are being created, and they\u2019ll have their place in flamenco history. Yet, when I watch Milagros dance, with\u00a0<i>bata de cola<\/i>\u00a0or not, ether on a theater stage or in a gathering of aficionados, I know that I\u2019m witnessing something more than just\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I have no doubt that, even as I personally prefer the old school, all flamenco dance forms and compatible and can coexist.
