{"id":5517,"date":"2018-04-03T16:59:27","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T16:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/manuel-torres-en-sevilla\/"},"modified":"2019-03-10T20:05:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T19:05:42","slug":"manuel-torres-in-seville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/manuel-torres-in-seville\/","title":{"rendered":"Manuel Torres in Seville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Next Friday at\u00a0<i>Casa de la Provincia<\/i>, in Seville, the second volume in the\u00a0<i>Colecci\u00f3n Carlos Mart\u00edn Ballester<\/i>\u00a0will be presented. This volume is devoted to the great Manuel Soto Loreto, the brilliant\u00a0<i>Manuel Torres<\/i>\u00a0(b. Jerez 1880, d. Seville 1933), without any doubt one of the great stars of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0in the 20th century. Thus, a genius, an artist without whom\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0in Seville cannot be conceived, is back to the capital of Andalusia, where he arrived in the late 1800s, enticed by the charms of the\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0Antonia La Gamba (from C\u00e1diz),\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and cockfighting. It hardly gets more Gypsy than that.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s peculiar that when\u00a0<i>El Majareta<\/i>\u00a0(his nickname in Seville) registered in the city\u2019s registry, he made a point that his occupation showed up as \u201c<i>canta\u00f3<\/i>\u201d. Not \u201c<i>cantante<\/i>\u201d or \u201c<i>cantador<\/i>\u201d (the usual words for \u201csinger\u201d in Spain at the time), but \u201c<i>canta\u00f3<\/i>\u201d with an accent in the \u201co\u201d (a term which would become exclusively\u00a0<i>flamenco<\/i>). He came from Jerez and in those parts\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0were indeed\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and not \u201c<i>cantantes<\/i>\u201d (\u201csingers\u201d). That was the case with his maternal uncle, Joaqu\u00edn Loreto Vargas,\u00a0<i>Joaqu\u00edn Lacherna<\/i>\u00a0(fishmonger and\u00a0<i>seguiriyero<\/i>) and also Loco Mateo, Antonio Frijones, Diego and Antonio El Marrurro, Paco La Luz and Tom\u00e1s el Nitri, who had been born in Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda but had settled in Jerez.<\/p>\n<p>How was the flamenco scene in Seville when Manuel Torres (or Ni\u00f1o de Jerez, as he was also known by the aficionados) arrived in that city? It was teeming with artists, caf\u00e9s, flamenco halls,\u00a0<i>tabancos<\/i>\u00a0and dance academies. It had two main hubs of good\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, Triana and La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, and also had great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0from Seville and elsewhere who lived and performed in the city: Chac\u00f3n, Fosforito el de C\u00e1diz, Escacena, El Portugu\u00e9s, La Serrana, Juan Dulce, Ram\u00f3n el Ollero, Pepe Villanueva, El Macareno, Miguel Macaca, Pepa de Oro, Enriqueta la Macaca and a long etcetera. New, young talent also started to achieve renown, such as Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Manuel Vallejo, Manuel Centeno, Pepe el de la Matrona and Bernardo el de los Lobitos.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel Torres revolutionized\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0(Gypsy\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>), because it had become sweet and refined in Seville due to certain artists such as Silverio, La Serneta, El Canario de \u00c1lora, Chac\u00f3n, Fosforito and Pepa de Oro. Manuel didn\u2019t sing in falsetto, but with his natural voice and with a Gypsy sound which was starting to disappear even in Triana. Thus, when he began performing at El Filarm\u00f3nico or El Novedades caf\u00e9s, or at the\u00a0<i>tabancos<\/i>\u00a0in La Alameda, Ni\u00f1o de Jerez\u2019s\u00a0<i>farrucas<\/i>,\u00a0<i>tientos<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>marianas<\/i>\u00a0were the talk of the town. Manuel\u2019s\u00a0<i>seguiriyas gitanas<\/i>, though, were reserved for the private gatherings of\u00a0<i>cabales<\/i>\u00a0(flamenco\u00a0<i>connoisseurs<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>He brought to Seville a new wat to perform the\u00a0<i>cante gitano<\/i>\u00a0of Jerez and all of C\u00e1diz province, influenced by his uncle Joaqu\u00edn, Enrique el Mellizo and Francisco la Perla, who was from Triana but had been living in Jerez from an early age. He brought that essence, but he had his unique style, a way to sing shortened, linked verses, with a natural voice, with\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>, scratches and convulsions. Manuel didn\u2019t extend the verses, he rather swallowed them, causing an irresistible effect in those who listened to him. He had\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>, which is a gift and not something that can be learned. El Majereta was able to confer an incredible flamenco depth even when singing simple\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>, something only a genius can achieve.<\/p>\n<p>When geniuses approach an art form, they contribute their ingenuity and talent, and the art form is forever changed. That\u2019s what happened with Manuel Torres: he arrived, sang with his own imprint, full of Gypsy essence, and changed the history of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He and Chac\u00f3n changed\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0forever, and they did it in Seville. That\u2019s why I celebrate the return of El Majareta to the city which welcomed him for over thirty-five years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
