I don\u2019t use to go to those popular events with tens of thousands of people in one street, where it\u2019s impossible to talk. Besides, with this government\u2019s meager pension, there\u2019s nothing left for fairs.<\/p>\n<p><b>-But you once told me that, back in your days, there were booths where renowned flamenco artists would stop by\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, in the 1950s and 1960s, indeed. Like in a booth called\u00a0<i>El Traga<\/i>, for example, where many famous\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, guitarists,\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0would stop by, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Perrate-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7c600cf29064e5f24d50\">El Perrate<\/a>, Ansonini del Puerto,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tomasa-y-Eduardo-de-la-Malena\/c112t\/577f24fc0cf21e6e1ebd7660\">Eduardo el de la Malena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda<\/a>\u2026 Yet, they would perform in parties, and at times when there were not many people around. These were the days when the fair was held in the Prado grounds, before they moved it to Los Remedios in 1973. After that, it became overcrowded and the art was lost.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Rich people\u2019s parties, right, grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Oh yes. Each\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>\u00a0in Seville had their own booth, or was a member of one, and they would throw parties for friends and customers. Some artists would make a living for the whole year, performing in such parties. I heard of one\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>\u00a0who gave one million pesetas to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>, and he only sang a few\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>, although he sang them superbly! One night, a famous bullfighter, Belmonte, took\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>\u00a0in a horse-drawn carriage to his booth. La Ni\u00f1a sang some\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0which, incidentally, were recorded by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Beni-de-C%C3%A1diz\/c112t\/55f754520cf24af6ea3c2483\">Beni de C\u00e1diz<\/a>\u00a0in a video, but that reel is nowhere to be found.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Am%C3%B3s-Rodr%C3%ADguez-Rey\/c112t\/570725280cf2e0dbcac7d9c1\">Am\u00f3s<\/a>, brother of Beni, assured me that the reel was at his home, but it hasn\u2019t been found to this day. Pastora sang and danced splendidly that night, even as her health was already faltering.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Isn\u2019t there any flamenco these days at the fair of Seville?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure there is, but there\u2019s too many people, so it gets too noisy. Also, there are no generous\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>s like in the old days. Well, there are a few, like Mr. Bad\u00eda of the ham company, and a couple of others. Have you ever been to his house in Roc\u00edo? He always brings artists and throws some amazing parties. I\u2019ve seen Herminia Borja sing and dance better than Lola Flores, and I\u2019ve also watched performances by Cancanilla de Marbella, Mari Pe\u00f1a, Chiquetete\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211;<a>Peric\u00f3n de C\u00e1diz<\/a>\u00a0wrote in his memories how, one night,\u00a0<a>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0was performing in one booth, but couldn\u2019t stand the barrel organ, and he felt terribly about it. Particularly because he needed the money, of course.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, too. It was hard to make a living performing in parties, because some\u00a0<i>se\u00f1orito<\/i>s could be annoying. Can you imagine Manuel in a party, listening to the conversations of ladies and madams?<\/p>\n<p><b>-Stop being sexist, grandpa, or you may get in trouble.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-For telling the truth? Nowadays, there are plenty of women who know about flamenco, but seventy years ago, it was hard to find a woman who had any clue about it. Tom\u00e1s avoided parties where women would be present, if he could. Whenever someone wanted to hire him, his two questions were: who was paying for the party, and whether women would be present.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Sexist, that Tom\u00e1s, no?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-For sure, Manolito, but that\u2019s how things were in those days, I\u2019m not making this up.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So, you\u2019re not going to the Fair this year\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No, I won\u2019t. The Fair can come to me.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Do you know any lyrics about the Fair of Seville?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Of course, there are lots. This one used to be sang by the father of Manolo Caracol (Caracol el del Bulto),\u00a0<i>por buler\u00edas:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>A la Feria no voy m\u00e1s,<br \/>\nporque canta La Moreno,<br \/>\nsaetas de madrug\u00e1.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>-La Moreno sang saetas in the early mornings?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, she wasn\u2019t quite right in the head and sang saetas at the Fair.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I love you grandpa.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
