{"id":5513,"date":"2018-04-08T16:57:09","date_gmt":"2018-04-08T16:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/cuidado-con-las-falsas-ilusiones\/"},"modified":"2019-03-09T12:01:54","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T11:01:54","slug":"lets-not-get-carried-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/lets-not-get-carried-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s not get carried away"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Although nowadays in flamenco there are already young, talented and established artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Reyes-y-Periquin\/c112t\/56aa9db50cf205a1e8531fed\">Antonio Reyes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino chico<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pedro-el-Grana%C3%ADno\/c112t\/57c4768073a449045ccde350\">Pedro el Grana\u00edno<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/08\/31\/Marina-Heredia-Morentangos\">Marina Heredia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/14\/To%C3%B1i-Fern%C3%A1ndez\">To\u00f1i Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a>\u00a0and many others, aficionados seem to be permanently expecting the arrival of the new messiah of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, so any young performer they come across is often considered a new flamenco genius. Yet, when it comes to new performers, particularly if they\u2019re teenagers, it\u2019s wise to be patient. I say this because I\u2019ve been dealing with flamenco for over four decades and, while I\u2019ve seen some artists become great stars of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, I\u2019ve also seen many performers become stranded in the way, if not fallen into the ditch, and into oblivion. I could give names, but I don\u2019t think this is necessary because I\u2019m sure they\u2019re already in the minds of the readers, and I know that those who follow ExpoFlamenco are very smart and sensible.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to be careful with the child prodigies of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, in particular, because it\u2019s just wrong to give children false hopes, which then become frustrations. I\u2019ve seen many cases like this in the last forty years, not only in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but also in\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0and guitar. In soccer, too, which was another of my passions, but which nowadays I only watch from a distance. Perhaps that\u2019s why I seldom lose my head whenever I hear about child\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in some town and people start talking about them as if they were new geniuses. For example, I could mention the\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0Reyes Carrasco, awarded a first prize in the Festival del\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0de las Minas and paraded on TV. Many times I\u2019ve been asked why I don\u2019t write about her, and I always answer that we must wait until she grows up and matures as a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>, because she may not make it.<\/p>\n<p>Something similar is happening with another\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, the teenager Manuel de la Tomasa, from Seville, who is a grandson of the great master\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Los-intocables-del-cante\">Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/a>. This means that he belongs to a clan of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0which includes geniuses such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and superb performers like Manuel\u2019s brother Pepe, or Pepe\u2019s daughter La Tomasa. This clan also includes historical\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as Joaqu\u00edn Lacherna, Torres\u2019 maternal uncle. The grandfather of this kid, Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa, is one of the few remaining active masters of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He\u2019s also the great-grandson of a truly great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Pies-de-Plomo\">Pies de Plomo<\/a>. That\u2019s an impressive lineage, ensuring good flamenco genes. Yet, that doesn\u2019t mean that this kid will end up becoming a professional\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, even if he certainly has plenty of qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel de la Tomasa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/01\/23\/Alonso-El-Piruli\">Purili de la L\u00ednea<\/a>, Reyes Carrasco, the guitarist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/david-rodriguez-un-nuevo-fenomeno-de-la-guitarra\">David de Arahal<\/a>\u2026 There are many more. Andalusia is still a fertile land for the art of flamenco, as it always has been, and new talent will keep appearing in the future. In the old days, such as after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) or during the great economic depression in the first two decades of the 20th century, such child prodigies were sometimes the main breadwinners of many families in Andalusia, often Gypsy. That was the case of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, who with barely ten or twelve years old was her family\u2019s provider, as her father was sick and his older brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo<\/a>\u00a0had lost his voice.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the financial situation of the families in Andalusia has totally changed, and today they don\u2019t suffer the same abject poverty as in previous years. So, the best thing we can do to help this new talent is allowing them to grow up, so they get properly trained in music academies or in their homes, and let time tell whether they\u2019ll become stars in a music genre which still is quite difficult to master. If flamenco is inside them, they\u2019ll succeed just fine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
