When it comes to flamenco, of course.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-I wouldn\u2019t say \u201cdead\u201d Manolito, but it\u2019s not looking very good, and that means it\u2019s not healthy.\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>-When has it been healthy?<\/p>\n<p>-If you check the history of flamenco in this city, which hasn\u2019t been written yet, although we know something about it, you\u2019ll realize that it had a golden age, the era of the\u00a0<i>caf\u00e9s cantantes<\/i>, the Seville of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0and El Burrero, where important artists came to this city from all over Andalusia. When those caf\u00e9s were closed, in particular\u00a0<i>El Filarm\u00f3nico, El Burrero<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Sal\u00f3n Silverio<\/i>, then\u00a0<i>El Novedades<\/i>\u00a0opened and it heralded a new golden age, which had a great number of iconic artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>, Escacena and a long etcetera. Then came the era of the\u00a0<i>\u00f3pera flamenca<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-And the 1936 Spanish Civil War put everything on hold, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, that war put an end to almost everything. When it ended in 1939, the performing companies came back, although it was never the same. Later came the famous\u00a0<i>tablaos<\/i>, the national flamenco contests, the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0and the flamenco festivals. This new movement would yield its fruits ten years later, with two decades, the 1960s and 1970s, which were memorable in the history of flamenco in Seville and its towns. In all of Andalusia, actually, although we\u2019re talking about Seville.<\/p>\n<p><b>-That\u2019s the time when there were a lot of\u00a0<i>maestros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>maestras<\/i>\u00a0in Seville, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Indeed, Manolito. In all areas of flamenco, not just in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. There\u2019s El Funi in Lebrija, and Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa in the city of Seville, and that\u2019s about it. There are other famous artists, but not as important, although that doesn\u2019t mean they are not good performers. The leading\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0nowadays is Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa, and some\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0want to hire him for just one thousand euros, while younger artists are offered twice as much, or more, although I won\u2019t say who. However, Seville doesn\u2019t have four or five leading flamenco stars, like is the case with Huelva, Jerez or Chiclana.
