Are people aware of the role of Gypsies in the Andalusian art form known as flamenco, or aren\u2019t they? I\u2019m asking you this on account of this controversy about who created the\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Manolito, what\u2019s being asked by those Gypsy intellectuals (some of them very enlightened) is the recognition of the contribution of Andalusian Gypsies to flamenco, that is, the Andalusian art. It\u2019s something I don\u2019t quite understand, because if they\u2019re Andalusian themselves and they have contributed something as valuable to their own land, I don\u2019t get why there\u2019s a need for such recognition. Anyway, we\u2019re all for it, because they have contributed a lot, there\u2019s no question about it. Non-Gypsies too, from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0and Currito de la Jeroma to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>. Not only from Andalusia, by the way, but also from Extremadura, let\u2019s not forget this, from Porrina and Fregenal to La Ca\u00edta and Miguel de Tena. There\u2019s also Madrid, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ram%C3%B3n-Montoya\/c112t\/5695df660cf263fc5a881f60\">Ram\u00f3n Montoya<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/31\/Angelillo\">Angelillo<\/a>, to name just two, or Barcelona, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%A1Carmen-La-Capitana\/c112t\/55f749310cf23d0ff003f44d\">Carmen Amaya<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mayte-Mart%C3%ADn-desconcertante-y-libre\/c112t\/5624632a0cf2c6c6437c0ce8\">Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Grandpa, what about a joint recognition, with the Junta acknowledging to role of all Spaniards in flamenco?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure, that too. Yet, if I had to credit the Gypsy people for anything in particular, regarding flamenco, it would be for the fact that they have been devoted to this Andalusian art for over two centuries, as performers, taking care of it and preserving its essence, rather than crediting them with the creation of flamenco, because this is not easy to prove. At any event, we can say that they created a particular way to sing, dance and play the guitar, instead of saying they created all of flamenco.<\/p>\n<p><b>-But grandpa, don\u2019t you think that everyone already knows that, the fact that Gypsies were instrumental in the creation of flamenco?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, everyone knows that, and all over the world, not just in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Manolito, this year is the 50th anniversary of an historical fact which we\u2019ll mention here, in case those intellectuals asking for that recognition forget about it. This year we celebrate that half a century ago, for the first time in history, a monument honoring a flamenco\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, was made. When she was still alive, actually. That was something that had never happened before, if my frail memory doesn\u2019t fail me. That is, a bronze monument was made to honor a woman,\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0and Gypsy.
