It\u2019s very important that these types of festival, the best and the ones with the greatest impact, maintain a high artistic level. However, in some of these galas, that level not only has not been maintained, but has been lowered considerably. How hard is it to sit down and come up with a program that matches the importance of the festival? It\u2019s not just the quality, but some of these galas are not even representative of today\u2019s flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>The story that really needs to be told nowadays is that that of the new, upcoming young talent of very high quality, and this cannot be omitted in a festival of such stature. I say this regarding this festival at La Uni\u00f3n, and also regarding the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>Flamenco on Fire<\/i>\u00a0festival in Pamplona, which have a significant commercial bent. It\u2019s not just that these festivals feature the same things over and over, they don\u2019t even seem to acknowledge the new trends in flamenco. For those who don\u2019t know it yet, the new trend is a return to the roots, to the traditional, perhaps as a result of a general fatigue created by this avalanche of false revolutionaries who we\u2019ve been enduring for the last fifteen years, under the pretext that every art evolves.<\/p>\n<p>Who says that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0has not evolved, without the need to sing a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 de Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/i>\u00a0with an electric guitar or a\u00a0<i>pajarona<\/i>\u00a0with an electronic keyboard? Anyone who can\u2019t notice the evolution between the\u00a0<i>ca\u00f1a<\/i>of Ni\u00f1o de Cabra and the\u00a0<i>ca\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0should get their ears checked by a doctor. I\u2019ve heard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!David-Lagos-y-Alfredo-Lagos\/c112t\/5798f8d30cf27547c72a86e8\">David Lagos<\/a>\u00a0sing\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0recorded a century ago and turn them totally around without destroying anything, and that\u2019s the value of a well-understood evolution. Why isn\u2019t David Lagos better regarded as a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, if he has so much talent for\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>There is something I don\u2019t understand, and I hope someone explains it to me. When\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/30\/Roc%C3%ADo-M%C3%A1rquez-se-pira-del-cante\">Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez<\/a>\u00a0released\u00a0<i>Firmamento<\/i>, her latest album, she got a thousand interviews in every newspaper and magazine in this country, not to mention TV and radio stations. Yet, when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/14\/Mari-Pe%C3%B1a\">Mari Pe\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0released her first album,\u00a0<i>Mi tierra<\/i>, no one seemed to care. It\u2019s not a matter of comparing these two artists (it\u2019s no secret that I greatly prefer the latter, from Utrera), this is just an example of what\u2019s being promoted as \u201cflamenco\u201d in our days.<\/p>\n<p>The mistake is to think of the traditional flamenco school as \u201cold\u201d. It\u2019s like saying that a soccer overhead kick by Ronaldo is \u201cold\u201d just because Pele did it in the 1960s (that kick is actually much older).\u00a0<i>Cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0is reborn in every throat, so nothing is \u201cold\u201d and definitely not \u201cexpired\u201d. I\u2019ve been listening to Israel Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s album\u00a0<i>Universo Pastora<\/i>\u00a0these days, and I\u2019m greatly enjoying it because he\u2019s not trying to imitate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">El Pinto<\/a>: he rather soaks their essence in and re-interprets their legacy in a very refreshing way. This lad also has a lot of talent, yet he\u2019s not featured in any of these big galas of the so-called leading festivals.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve said this many times: if those of us who love and support traditional flamenco (without opposing what is new and good), don\u2019t promote and protect it, this won\u2019t end well. Let the clowns who dwell in the social networks (some of them\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>) call me fascist for saying this.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t been to the\u00a0<i>Festival de las Minas de La Uni\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0in many years, and I was considering attending it this year, to re-live again a festival that I\u2019ve experienced in many different years and periods, from the 1980s to our days. Yet, I\u2019ll pass, because I\u2019m not liking this year\u2019s edition at all.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
