I not only like writing them, but also reading other people\u2019s lyrics. I greatly admire Ferrand, Manuel Machado, Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>\u00a0(this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>from Puente Genil is one of the best lyricists of the 20th century), Rafel Montesinos, Antonio Garc\u00eda Barbeito and many others. Writing a simple three-verse\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0is not easy, particularly one suitable for singing and capable to express its intended meaning. Because, as I wrote many years ago, \u201c<i>en tres versos bien escritos, nos cabe toda una vida, y algo m\u00e1s que lo vivido<\/i>\u201d (\u201c<i>in three well-written verses, we can fit a whole life, and even something more<\/i>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>I have mentioned several famous authors, but there have been probably hundreds of other authors throughout flamenco history who have often remained anonymous. Those were the ones who created the lyrics sung by El Planeta (<i>A la luna le pido<\/i>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0(<i>A la mala lengua<\/i>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0(<i>Engarz\u00e1 en oro y marfil<\/i>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0(<i>Quisiera yo regenar<\/i>) or her brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>\u00a0(<i>En el patio de Caif\u00e1s<\/i>), all lof them renowned flamenco stars. Who knows the names of the writers who created such literary wonders, now part of the traditional repertoire of\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>Francisco M\u00e1rmol Moreno is a popular poet from Puebla de Cazalla, a very\u00a0<i>flamenco<\/i>\u00a0town in Seville province, the birthplace of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>, Lola Lucena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Miguel-Vargas\">Miguel Vargas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-Clavel-y-Pedro-Pe%C3%B1a\/c112t\/57799f7c0cf231c9c3fad850\">Diego Clavel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/10\/26\/Manuel-Gerena-la-voz-prohibida\">Manuel Gerena<\/a>, among other less famous\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>. He is a great\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0aficionado and very well-versed in flamenco, something which I believe is essential to write good flamenco lyrics. The lyrics of Paco (as he\u2019s known among his friends) are totally suitable for singing. These lyrics are not far removed from the places where\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is performed:\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>, taverns or the gatherings of friends. His lyrics have the scent of his town, of the wet sawdust in the taverns or the marinade of Bar Central, a bar in his town.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco has already published five books of lyrics, including his latest release, \u201c<i>Letras flamencas de la campi\u00f1a morisca<\/i>\u201d, which I\u2019ve read with the same interest as I\u2019ve read the previous ones. Once again, I\u2019ve been pleasantly surprised by his great ability to write flamenco lyrics. We all know that he\u2019s currently enjoying a well-deserved retirement, so he certainly has the time, but even so, Paco is a lyric-creating machine. I\u2019m sure this is because flamenco lyrics are his lifelong passion.<\/p>\n<p>I admire Paco\u2019s simplicity and the fact the such simplicity comes to life in his poetry. Simplicity as in devoid of embellishments, not as in \u201cplain\u201d. If he were a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0instead of a poet, he would be like Miguel Vargas or Diego Clavel: natural like the evening wind in the countryside.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to pick a favorite lyric from this book, because it has hundreds of them for many different\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>, but if I had to choose my favorite, it would be this one:<\/p>\n<p><i>C\u00f3mo han dejao el Cerro<br \/>\nde los Dolores,<br \/>\nlos olivos pa cotos<br \/>\nde cazaores.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a\u00a0<i>liviana<\/i>\u00a0in the style of Moreno Galv\u00e1n and typical of La Puebla and of Paco M\u00e1rmol himself. It can be loosely translated as \u201c<i>Look how the olive groves have left Dolores Hill, to give room for the hunting grounds<\/i>\u201d. It\u2019s simple and deep, subtly denouncing, without any hatred, a sad reality of the countryside.<\/p>\n<p>I fully recommend this book.
