There we go again with feminism in flamenco, which has been a popular topic for a while. Perhaps she didn\u2019t really mean that, but she said it, and now it\u2019s on the record. Can you imagine if a man had stated that flamenco would be nothing without men? Hell would break loose.<\/p>\n<p>We even have to be careful when pointing out these things, because power is a factor in flamenco, and women have an important role in it. A well-known flamenco feminist has barred be from some places because she doesn\u2019t like me, and I\u2019ll talk about this one day so everyone knows what\u2019s going on. I\u2019ll say who she is, because she has a lot of power and is involved in lots of flamenco events due to her political connexions.<\/p>\n<p>They have gone from demanding recognition and a space in flamenco (something totally fair), to claiming that flamenco is a women\u2019s thing. It\u2019s not that this statement was made by, say,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Carmen-Linares-Buler%C3%ADas-por-Sole%C3%A1\/c112t\/5638ed1b0cf28330832af8dd\">Carmen Linares<\/a>, one of the great\u00a0<i>maestras<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0in our days, but by a flamenco-ish singer. By the way, I think she\u2019s a great artist and I like her youthful and cheerful style, although I\u2019d never thought of her as a \u201c<i>cantaora<\/i>\u201d. Yet, Ni\u00f1a Pastori is in the media\u2019s spotlight, and anything she says reverberates in the social networks. Thus, this artist from San Fernando should measure her words.<\/p>\n<p>Some people embrace the theory that the first\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>\u00a0in history was a\u00a0<i>nana<\/i>, and since\u00a0<i>nanas<\/i>\u00a0are \u201cwomen\u2019s\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u201d, then this meant that women invented flamenco. My colleague and friend Enrique Montiel, who among many other things is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u2019s biographer, uses to say the flamenco was invented by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0(Pastora Pav\u00f3n). So, this topic could fill many books in several volumes. Yet, the only thing we know for sure is that since the first news about flamenco were published in newspapers or books, women and men show up together, usually singing the same\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The above-mentioned Ni\u00f1a de los Peines used to say that she learned to sing listening to her parents, both of them, and to her grandparents. Her mother (also named Pastora) was reportedly very good singing and dancing\u00a0<i>por tangos<\/i>, the favorite\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0in Gypsy parties before\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0became so overwhelmingly popular. Her father, El Pa\u00edti, was a very good singer of\u00a0<i>cantes a palo seco<\/i>, the so-called\u00a0<i>cantes de fragua<\/i>, as he was a blacksmith. In Arahal (the birthplace of Pastora\u2019s mother) people also say that her grandfather, Tom\u00e1s Cruz\u00a0<i>El Calilo<\/i>\u00a0(who was also born in this town), had infinite grace and was a spectacular bailaor.<\/p>\n<p>It would be great if the subject of woman in flamenco would not be used for absurd controversies, because I believe this is an empty debate. In my opinion, it\u2019s really senseless to wage war in order to establish who contributed more to the creation of flamenco: men or women. According to Pastori, men didn\u2019t contribute anything, although I\u2019m sure she didn\u2019t mean that. If that\u2019s the case, it would be great if she could make this clear, to avoid any further controversies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
