{"id":5390,"date":"2018-05-24T16:09:59","date_gmt":"2018-05-24T16:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/el-abuelo-y-antonio-mairena\/"},"modified":"2019-02-28T00:29:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T23:29:09","slug":"grandpa-and-antonio-mairena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/grandpa-and-antonio-mairena\/","title":{"rendered":"Grandpa and Antonio Mairena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>-Grandpa, this September will be the 35th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of the 20th century,\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\"><b>Antonio Mairena<\/b><\/a><b>. How time flies, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-It flies pretty fast, Manolito. I attended his burial and it was something to behold. Half of Spain\u2019s flamenco aficionados came over, and the streets of the town were like rivers of sorrow. It\u2019s something I\u2019ll never forget. After the burial, I came back to the city\u2019s main square,\u00a0<i>Plaza de las Flores<\/i>\u00a0(now called\u00a0<i>Plaza Antonio Mairena<\/i>) and in a bar across the square there were aficionados crying, saying it was the end of\u00a0<i>cante gitano<\/i>. Among them, there were politicians and artists who were very close to this master. It was natural, because Antonio was a great star, one of the best\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in recent memory, and there was a lot of sadness.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Not\u00a0<i>the<\/i>\u00a0best, grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-That\u2019s a matter of personal tastes.\u00a0<i>Cante<\/i>\u00a0is very diverse and it has many different trends and nuances. Each aficionado has their own, very personal opinion about this. Some people say that, indeed, Antonio Mairena was the best\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0in flamenco history. I think it\u2019s a barbarity to say such thing, yet those who truly believe it have the right to voice their opinion. Mairena was a top artist for twenty years, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>\u00a0were top artists for fifty years. However, those twenty years when Mairena was the leading flamenco artist were very important in flamenco. Not just because of him, but also because of other masters such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Chocolate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Do you consider yourself a\u00a0<i>mairenista<\/i>, grandpa? Do you share Mairena\u2019s ideology?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No, I don\u2019t. I greatly admire Antonio Mairena, but being a\u00a0<i>mairenista<\/i>\u00a0is something else, and I don\u2019t relate to this ideology. There\u2019s Antonio, and then there\u2019s the fanatical, intolerant\u00a0<i>mairenismo<\/i>. They are different things. He was an amazing\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, wise, with an extensive knowledge of flamenco and a boundless passion for this art. His voice was a torrent of Gypsy-ness. However, his legacy was controversial in some aspects, although it was very positive in others, without any doubt. Part of his negative legacy has clearly damaged his reputation.\u00a0<i>Mairenismo<\/i>\u00a0has been disastrous for flamenco in some aspects. Yet, the legacy of Antonio Mairena, from a musical point of view, has been great, although it wasn\u2019t perfect. Then again, no legacy is perfect, not even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What about his festival? This year\u2019s lineup doesn\u2019t seem very appropriate, does it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Not at all, I won\u2019t even try to say it nicely. If Antonio could get out of his grave, he\u2019d run them out of town. I don\u2019t understand how they can come up with such lineup for the 35th anniversary of his death. I\u2019m going to tell you something, and I don\u2019t care what people think: when are they going to bring\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/19\/La-esencia-de-Perico-el-Pa%C3%B1ero\">Perico El Pa\u00f1ero<\/a>\u00a0to this festival? He would have been perfect for this year. He\u2019s one of the few\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0left in Spain who still perform in the Mairena style, with his way of singing and dancing, sharing his commitment to traditional flamenco. There\u2019s so much talk about Mairena\u2019s Gypsy-Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and the one who really knows about this is left out. Go figure.<\/p>\n<p><b>-The same happens in other festivals, doesn\u2019t it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sadly, yes. In Dos Hermanas, in La Puebla, in Mor\u00f3n, in Lebrija&#8230; They\u2019ll ruin part of flamenco history, the era of the summer festivals, an era defined by Antonio Mairena, incidentally.<\/p>\n<p><b>-And what do you think is lacking in Mairena\u2019s festival, in your opinion?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Brains, Manolito. That\u2019s precisely something Antonio had to spare, as he was an intelligent\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0with very clear ideas. All his legacy will be ruined by those who decided the lineup for this year. Not just the lineup, but other things as well. Last year it was the 100th anniversary of Frijones, one of Antonio\u2019s icons, and nothing was done to celebrate it. Yet they brought someone to talk about the\u00a0<i>petenera<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/10\/08\/Perro-de-Paterna\">Perro de Paterna<\/a>, I don\u2019t remember if it was last year or the year before. Should I go on?<\/p>\n<p><b>-And this year they\u2019ll bring in Arc\u00e1ngel, after the controversy in that show of his, where Mairena was portrayed as a sinister, hooded figure.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Well, that wasn\u2019t too bad, it was just a show.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arc%C3%A1ngel-en-el-Tablao\/c112t\/565e7b060cf211cbf012723d\">Arc\u00e1ngel<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t quite fit in the\u00a0<i>Festival de Mairena<\/i>, but the same can be said of others in previous editions. That controversy is now history, let\u2019s just hope that the public embraces him as such a good\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and artist deserves, regardless of personal tastes.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I\u2019d like you to give a lecture about Antonio Mairena in the town of Mairena, grandpa. Would that be possible?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No, it would not be possible, and it\u2019s not something I\u2019d like to do anyway. I\u2019ve talked about Antonio Mairena all over Spain, and even in other countries. But never in Mairena, and a lecture is out of the question. It\u2019s not possible because if I talked about him, I\u2019d say things people wouldn\u2019t like. I\u2019d love to give a lecture about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0(Antonio\u2019s teacher), and also about her brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Mojama-%C2%BFredescubriendo-a-un-genio\/c112t\/5600abed0cf25fa7fe12dd39\">Juan Mojama<\/a>.
