Actually, I think it\u2019s the opposite: there is an unfortunate persecution against those who keep flamenco tradition regarding forms inherited from great masters of the 19th century. \u201cThey repeat what others did\u201d, they say. Repeat, or interpret?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m one of those who believe (and I\u2019ve always been open to every new and fresh creation by talented artists) that a\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a de Chac\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0is reborn in every throat whenever it\u2019s sang, even if it\u2019s performed following a music sheet. Weren\u2019t these\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0reborn in the voices of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/05\/31\/Jacinto-Almad%C3%A9n-y-Paco-de-Luc%C3%ADa\">Jacinto Almad\u00e9n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>? So, if kids nowadays sing a\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a de Chac\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0or a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 de La Sarneta<\/i>, if they do it well, they\u2019re not repeating the past, but interpreting and honoring those two great musicians.<\/p>\n<p>I say \u201cgreat musicians\u201d because both of them left us personal styles which remain alive in today\u2019s artists. When\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/10\/Fernando-el-de-Triana\">Fernando el de Triana<\/a>\u00a0labelled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0as a good copyist, he wasn\u2019t criticizing him, it was the other way around: he was telling us that Tom\u00e1s knew the traditional legacy and he performed it flawlessly, as was indeed the case.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u00e1s loved the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0of Enrique el Mellizo, La Sarneta, Frasco el Colorao and Frijones, even as he never met any of them. Yet, he also admired Ni\u00f1o de Marchena due to his creativity. Tom\u00e1s used to say that when God spread salt on the earth, it all fell on this genius from Marchena.<\/p>\n<p>I want to conclude saying that it\u2019s perfectly compatible having avant-garde creators and traditional\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who perform flamenco\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0in the traditional way. Wasn\u2019t\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>\u00a0compatible with Valderrama, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>\u00a0compatible with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>? Just like today\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arc%C3%A1ngel-en-el-Tablao\/c112t\/565e7b060cf211cbf012723d\">Arc\u00e1ngel<\/a>\u00a0is compatible with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pedro-el-Grana%C3%ADno\/c112t\/57c4768073a449045ccde350\">Pedro EL Grana\u00edno<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Estrella-Morente-Tangos-del-Cerro\/c112t\/55f780ac0cf2de902a86ab99\">Estrella Morente<\/a>\u00a0is compatible with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/06\/Mar%C3%ADa-Terremoto-y-Miguel-Poveda\">Mar\u00eda Terremoto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There have always been creators in flamenco, back since the days of El Planeta, and\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is so rich in its variety of styles because people dared to do new things. Yet, flamenco is still a cultural jewel thanks to those who decided to be faithful to the traditional forms, keeping their essence. So, it\u2019s pointless going against those who create and also against those who preserve.<\/p>\n<p>I use to criticize those who create without any basis and discard flamenco\u2019s essence. I have no patience for those who, in order to do something new, seek to destroy what already exist. Or mock it, which is something that had never happened before.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Siete-a%C3%B1os-sin-Mario-Maya\/c112t\/5604c1250cf2375d99dbfea0\">Mario Maya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/opinion-archivo\/antonio-gades-bailarin-y-bailaor\">Gades<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/05\/31\/Antonio-Gades-y-Cristina-Hoyos\">Cristina Hoyos<\/a>\u00a0created without destroying anything, and they never mocked the traditional forms. Yet, I can\u2019t say the same about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/10\/06\/El-abuelo-y-la-gesta-de-Roc%C3%ADo-Molina\">Roc\u00edo Molina<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-momento-dulce-de-Israel-Galv%C3%A1n\/c112t\/5683464d0cf236d403925031\">Israel Galv\u00e1n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
