He was born at La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, no less, where his parents (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and Elo\u00edsa S\u00e1nchez, the former being the eldest brother of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, and the latter being the great teacher Elo\u00edsa Alb\u00e9niz) lived for many years, and where the best\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0of all time developed, although it wasn\u2019t born there. That street of Seville which gave its name to the whole neighborhood, near San Lorenzo, La Feria and San Juan de la Palma, was the birthplace of a great flamenco musician who effectively belonged to one of the greatest families of Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, the Pav\u00f3ns.<\/p>\n<p>As we stated above, Arturo Pav\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez was son of the eldest brother of Pastora and Tom\u00e1s. His father was born in 1882 in Arahal, which was also the birthplace of little Arturo\u2019s grandmother, Pastora Cruz Vargas. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to the Puerta Osario district of Seville, where Pastora and Tom\u00e1s, two of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in history, were born (in 1890 and 1993, respectively). The reason for the relocation of the Pav\u00f3n Cruz family from Arahal to Seville was job-related, as Francisco, father of the Pav\u00f3n siblings, was a blacksmith and he was hired to work in the forge of Triana\u2019s L\u00e9rida family, in the branch located on Sol street in the San Rom\u00e1n parish.<\/p>\n<p>The three Pav\u00f3n siblings grew up in that neighborhood, San Rom\u00e1n, and well into the 20th century they moved to La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Arturo (senior) died in 1959, when he lived in the Plaza de la Mata district. Tom\u00e1s passed away in 1952 in that same neighborhood, in the house of Arturo and Elo\u00edsa. Pastora died in 1969, when she lived at 20 Calatrava Street, where the great Ni\u00f1o Medina had lived for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, little Arturo, the flamenco pianist, was born in the midst of a Gypsy family which lived for many years in La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules. He was born in 1931, a time when La Alameda was teeming with flamenco artists and\u00a0<i>tabancos<\/i>\u00a0and it was, without a doubt, the best school of the world of flamenco. Not exactly because of the artists who were born at La Alameda, as there weren\u2019t many of them, but because of the artists who came from everywhere else. In those years, the 1930s, La Macarrona and La Malena, Pepe Rebollo and Mazaco, Fernanda and Juana Ant\u00fanez, La Serrana and La Sordina, Ni\u00f1o Medina and La Moreno, among many others, still lived in La Alameda. This was also the birthplace of Caracol, of course, who was born on Lumbreras street.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t by chance that Arturo Pav\u00f3n soon felt the calling of classical music, since both his father and his uncle Tom\u00e1s were big fans of it, the former being an admirer of Beethoven and the later of Chopin. Both of them particularly liked piano, an instrument played by his mother, the teacher Elo\u00edsa S\u00e1nchez, whose academy in Seville trained many dancers and singers, among them Juanita Reina, for example, whose mother, unable to pay for her lessons, paid with her own hand-made crochet doilies, as Elo\u00edsa herself told me.<\/p>\n<p>The great pianist enrolled in the\u00a0<i>Real Conservatorio de M\u00fasica de Sevilla<\/i>, intent on pursuing a musical career, and thanks to those studies he was able to give us his\u00a0<i>Suite flamenca<\/i>\u00a0(1991), one of the most flamenco musical works in existence. Yet, besides being a great musician beyond flamenco, Arturo Pav\u00f3n made history in our art for accompanying so many albums and live performances of his father in law, the great Manolo Caracol. It was in this field where this pianist became essential and created a school. He wasn\u2019t the first pianist in flamenco, as there had been others at the time of the\u00a0<i>caf\u00e9s cantantes<\/i>\u00a0of the 19th century, but he was the most important of them all, and the most\u00a0<i>flamenco<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Arturo married the singer Luisa Ortega, daughter of Caracol, and from this union the\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0Salom\u00e9 Pav\u00f3n was born, the last remaining heir of this great family of Seville\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Antonio died on June 6, 2005, in Madrid, where he was buried.<\/p>\n<p>In the year 2009, a concert honoring this pianist took place in the\u00a0<i>Teatro Nacional Lope de Vega<\/i>, in Seville, his birthplace. Yet, the best tribute to his memory is that whenever we hear Manolo Caracol singing, whether he\u2019s accompanied by Arturo\u2019s piano or not, we remember him. It\u2019s impossible to separate his piano flamenco from that unforgettable voice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
