{"id":5374,"date":"2018-06-12T15:59:58","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T15:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/la-vida-y-el-alma-en-las-letras\/"},"modified":"2019-02-17T09:45:41","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T08:45:41","slug":"life-and-soul-in-lyrics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/life-and-soul-in-lyrics\/","title":{"rendered":"Life and soul in lyrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I still prefer\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0from a particular time period, from the early 20th century to the 1970s, because it\u2019s possible to get to know virtually all artists in those seventy years through the lyrics in their\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Recordando-a-El-Carbonerillo\/c112t\/56b81aa40cf2dc1600e907a6\">El Carbonerillo<\/a>\u00a0(Seville, 1906-1937), used to tell his life story in his\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>, although we must point out that not all the lyrics he sang were written by him, but also by authors who knew him well, knew how he felt and how he lived his life, sometimes bitterly, others happily. Topics such as his mother, love and heartbreak were very important for this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, Roc\u00edo Garc\u00eda Cuesta, born in Seville, was a tough woman who raised several children in difficult times. She only had two male children, El Carbonerillo (Manuel Vega Garc\u00eda) and Isidoro, who never had much to do with\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Roc\u00edo felt special love for his Manolito, a cute kid who had been born with the gift of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Anita, one of the two sisters of Carbonerillo that I met, told be that he already sang when he was 5 years old, and when he was 7 he would entertain the workers at the Pickman textile factory (where she and her other two sisters worked) singing from the top of a table. At lunchtime, they\u2019d put him on a table to sing\u00a0<i>fandangos de El Colorao de La Macarena<\/i>, or some guajira by Manuel Escacena.<\/p>\n<p>El Carbonero was soon acquainted with heartbreak, when he was a teenager, something quite common in that period of our lives. He had a girlfriend who soon dumped him and hooked up with a widower, according to the testimony of people I was able to talk when I was writing a biography of this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Seville. That heartbreak took out of his chest the most harrowing\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>\u00a0and the most desperate\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Y te echaste a re\u00edr.<br \/>\nMe viste un d\u00eda llorar<br \/>\ny te echaste a re\u00edr.<br \/>\nYo no te quise contar<br \/>\nque aquel llanto era por ti<br \/>\nAl verte tan desgraci\u00e1.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And you started laughing<br \/>\nOne day you saw me crying<br \/>\nAnd you started laughing<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t want to tell you<br \/>\nThat I cried for you<br \/>\nWhen I saw you were so miserable.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can imagine this great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0crying for that woman, and she laughing at him in his presence, as it happened more than once. In one of those occasions he even slapped her in public, in a bar, according to the testimony of people in his circle whom I met.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0is all about, telling things about life. It\u2019s not the same, singing lyrics by someone who has never met us, than singing our own lyrics, or those by someone who knows us well. As another example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0sang many lyrics by his brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arturo-Pav%C3%B3n-un-cantaor-de-armas-tomar\/c112t\/570b0d5f0cf21d11795676f4\">Arturo<\/a>, who was a good lyricist, although he never took songwriting seriously. Even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0sang lyrics by Arturo, since they were good friends. Yet, Tom\u00e1s also sang some of his own lyrics, two of them never recorded,\u00a0<i>por soleares<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Me voy a la calle Feria,<br \/>\nque est\u00e1 cantando Pacuco<br \/>\nlas coplas de La Sarneta.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I\u2019m going to Feria street<br \/>\nThere, Pacuco is singing<br \/>\nThe verses of La Sarneta<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pacuco, born in Seville, was a boyfriend of La Sarneta de Jerez, who also lost his head for this beautiful artist, to the point that he slashed his own throat with a barber\u2019s razor, although he survived and sang with his voice badly damaged by his injury. El Cuco, uncle of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>\u00a0(brother of his father) did the same thing because he fell madly in love with Pastora Imperio, who corresponded at first, but then rejected him, leaving him ruined and crazy. In a state of insanity, one day he went to a hardware store, bought a barber\u2019s razor and cut his head off with a deep slash.<\/p>\n<p>Every year I get dozens of new\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0albums and I seldom hear new verses which speak about the artists\u2019s lives, or about their feelings. These are very well-produced albums, with excellent sound and all kinds of technical wizardry, yet they feel empty.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Hice de mi vida un sue\u00f1o,<br \/>\nluego me dijo una rosa<br \/>\nque los sue\u00f1os, sue\u00f1os son,<br \/>\ny a otra cosa, mariposa.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I turned my life into a dream<br \/>\nThen a rose told me<br \/>\nDreams are just dreams<br \/>\nSo, fly away, butterfly.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I still prefer\u00a0cante\u00a0from a particular time period, from the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":8810,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[66],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5374","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-archivo"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
