Not much has been written about his relationship with Seville, but he performed several times in this province, not just in the caf\u00e9s of the capital but also in other flamenco establishments of various provincial towns. One of such places was Herrera, for example, a town of Seville with little flamenco tradition, where the\u00a0<i>Salon Arjona<\/i>\u00a0was located, owned by Manuel Arjona, who was a close friend of this great cantaor from V\u00e9lez-M\u00e1laga. Juan Breva not only performed several times in his friend\u2019s venue, but he also brought in other artists he recommended, such as El Cojo de M\u00e1laga and La Trini. Let\u2019s not forget that Breva had his own company of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and he was always committed to find new talent.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago, I had the opportunity to spend a wonderful day with the late Antonio el Monino, from Herrera, who at the time was one of the most senior experts of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. I had travelled to Herrera to finally be able to go inside the old\u00a0<i>Sal\u00f3n de Manuel Arjona<\/i>, a venue where all the great flamenco artists from the beginning of the 20th century until the start of the 1936 Spanish Civil War had performed. According to El Monino, this venue was the stage of performances by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>, Ni\u00f1o de Cabra,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, Manuel Escacena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Recordando-a-El-Carbonerillo\/c112t\/56b81aa40cf2dc1600e907a6\">Carbonerillo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>, Canalejas de Puerto Real, Perla de Triana and, above all,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>, who also used to sing saetas from the balconies.<\/p>\n<p>This hall is still preserved as it was in those days, and in its walls we can see photographs from the 19th century and yellowish newspaper pages of that time, particularly clippings about Emilio Castelar, the politician from C\u00e1diz who was briefly president of Spain during its First Republic in the 1870s, and who abolished Spanish nobility titles and slavery in Puerto Rico. Quite a character. The bar is from those days, and it\u2019s still in perfect condition. There is also has a barrel of Jerez from the same period, and it gave me goosebumps just to think that some of those artists mentioned above would have drank from it.<\/p>\n<p>This establishment belonged to Manuel Arjona, flamenco aficionado and committed entrepreneur. He used to befriend the artists who performed in his venue, and he reportedly was a great friend of Juan Breva, the great cantaor from M\u00e1laga, and also of Cayetano el de Cabra. Manuel Arjona died in 1935 and soon the Spanish Civil War began, putting an end to flamenco activities in that establishment. When I entered that hall and saw those very old photographs on the walls I felt really moved. I could easily imagine Chac\u00f3n, Pastora, Carbonero, Marchena and Vallejo singing there, in their prime.<\/p>\n<p>The place is currently owned by the great-grandson of Manuel Arjona. It would be great if Herrera\u2019s Town Council could acquire it, turning it into a cultural center or a museum, because it\u2019s a true jewel, perhaps the only well-preserved flamenco hall of those days in the province of Seville. It would be sad if one day it ended up being demolished and turned into a fast food restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio Berm\u00fadez Arjona,\u00a0<i>El Monino<\/i>, was a nephew of Manuel Arjona and he use to speak wonders of him and of his relationship with Juan Breva.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
