That\u2019s the case of Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez de los Santos,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/10\/Antonio-El-Chaqueta\"><i>El Chaqueta<\/i><\/a>, whose 100th anniversary we celebrate this year. He was born in La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n (C\u00e1diz province) on May 10, 1918. He was the son of a Gypsy from M\u00e1laga, Jos\u00e9 Fern\u00e1ndez Vargas, and a Gypsy from Jerez, Tomasa de los Santos Moreno. He would have grown up in a very suitable environment to become a flamenco artist, then.<\/p>\n<p>He was the half-brother of the great\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0Tom\u00e1s el Chaqueta, on his mother side. Both his mother and his father (nicknamed\u00a0<i>El Mono<\/i>) were very good singers. His uncle Tom\u00e1s was who introduced Antonio to the world of flamenco performing, first in Seville, and later in other cities with a strong flamenco tradition. I remember that Maestro Peana, guitarist from Seville, once told me how another Tom\u00e1s enjoyed listening to him:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, brother of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>, for whom Antonio always felt a great admiration. Tom\u00e1s referred to him as Antoni\u00f1o El Mono, who was the stage name of El Chaqueta until his brother suggested using \u201cAntonio El Chaqueta\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio El Chaqueta was, above all,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and artist of artists, something which is not very common in the history of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He was known but wasn\u2019t really popular. He was mostly a role model for those who were able to find a treasure in his voice, which had a very unique sound, and a complete control of rhythm, which allowed him to play around comp\u00e1s and make some unique tongue-twisters. That\u2019s why he was in such high demand by\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%A1Carmen-La-Capitana\/c112t\/55f749310cf23d0ff003f44d\">Carmen Amaya<\/a>, the queen of Gypsy\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>(Antonio was just a child the first time he sang for her).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Dios te ha dado la gracia,<br \/>\nMar\u00eda Dolores.<br \/>\nY en tus ojos en vez de miradas<br \/>\nhay rayos de sol.<br \/>\nD\u00e9jame que te cante<br \/>\nmorena de mis amores,<br \/>\nun bolero que embruje<br \/>\ntu garbo que es muy espa\u00f1ol.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">God has given you grace,<br \/>\nMar\u00eda Dolores.<br \/>\nThere are no looks in your eyes<br \/>\nOnly sunshine rays<br \/>\nLet me sing for you<br \/>\nMy beloved brunette<br \/>\nA bolero to put a spell on<br \/>\nYour very Spanish poise<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This song\u00a0<i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>, recorded by Antonio in 1950, accompanied by the guitarist Paco Aguilera, is the best-known of his repertoire. There\u2019s also \u201c<i>En la noche negra<\/i>\u201d, and that\u00a0<i>bolero por buler\u00edas<\/i>, \u201c<i>Nadie se haga de ilusiones<\/i>\u201d, from the same period. And we can\u2019t forget his\u00a0<i>tanguillos<\/i>, \u201c<i>Senta\u00edto en la escalera<\/i>\u201d. A genius, without a doubt, adored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>, who was among the few who would talk about him, at a time when almost no one did.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, besides being among the best\u00a0<i>fester<\/i>\u00a0of all time, El Chaqueta was also a good singer of\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>s and\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0\u201c<i>por arriba<\/i>\u201d, using like few others the difficult technique of linking verses. That\u2019s perhaps the least-known thing about him by most aficionados. It all together makes this historic artist an obligatory reference. Talking about Antonio El Chaqueta is talking about one of the greatest, even if he never became a big, popular star. Time, as I stated at the beginning of this article, has managed to give him the place he deserved in flamenco history.<\/p>\n<p>This master died in 1980, the year when the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0was born and\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0began to take a new direction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
