Nowadays, we may even come across a performance by El Lombo in a flamenco festival, and I\u2019d rather pass. And if they bring in Rosal\u00eda, well, what can I say? I\u2019m too old to be fooled.<\/p>\n<p><b>-But you go to these festivals, or not?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure I do. I\u2019ll attend to the new one they\u2019ll hold in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/la-apuesta-de-conil-por-el-flamenco\">Conil<\/a>, with a lineup I like:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/08\/29\/Pedro-el-Grana%C3%ADno\">El Grana\u00edno<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/06\/Mar%C3%ADa-Terremoto-y-Miguel-Poveda\">Mar\u00eda Terremoto<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino hijo<\/a>, Caracolillo de C\u00e1diz,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jos%C3%A9-Carpio-El-Mijita-y-Miguel-Salado\/c112t\/57ab85fa0cf2736028842f78\">El Mijita de Jerez<\/a>\u2026 Could it get any better? Besides, you\u2019ll be the MC, so that\u2019s yet another reason to go to Conil on July 14.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Lover\u2019s Day\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No! What\u2019s wrong with you? Valentine\u2019s day is on February 14.<\/p>\n<p><b>-The only time I really fell in love, when I as a kid, was on a July 14, so, for me, Lover\u2019s Day is on that date, not in February. Besides, February is way too cold to be in love.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Flamenco festivals, Manolito, are still interesting in this time of the year. The Potaje de Utrera, for example, is on the right track. However, the festivals of La Uni\u00f3n and Mairena\u2026, well, I rather not say anything or we&#8217;ll get in trouble once again. The festival in Dos Hermanas, I think it was sad. While here in the south of Spain we seem unable to discover our true north, the north seems to be winning the south. There are very good flamenco festivals outside of Spain or in the north of this country. Soon the festival of Mont-de-Marsan will be held, in France, and it\u2019s one of the most authentic flamenco festivals in the world. It\u2019s also very well organized. It\u2019s odd that good flamenco finds more support outside of Andalusia than inside it.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Maybe it\u2019s just because times have changed, grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure, times have changed, but they\u2019ve also changed outside of Andalusia, yet they still promote traditional, serious flamenco out there, while here we feature Ni\u00f1o de Elche at the Bienal.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I remember when flamenco purists objected to artists such as<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\"><b>Morente<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0or the\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/14\/Lole-y-Manuel\"><b><i>Lole y Manuel<\/i><\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0duet in flamenco festivals.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Are you comparing those geniuses to Ni\u00f1o de Elche?<\/p>\n<p><b>-No, grandpa, I\u2019m just reminding you that, through history, there has always been people complaining and objecting about some of the artists featured in flamenco festivals.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-True. I remember one time when the promoter and agent Pulp\u00f3n cancelled a lot of performances in flamenco festivals by a great, traditional bailaora, because she included a caj\u00f3n in her ensemble. That was in the 70s or 80s, when we were no strangers to innovation. Yet, nowadays no one would object to something like that.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So grandpa, why do you keep going to the summer festivals, even if you don\u2019t go as often as before?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Because it\u2019s in festivals where cante can be truly enjoyed. For example, imagine a cool evening in July, having a beer and listening to Rancapino Chico. Don\u2019t tell me that\u2019s not a great plan.<\/p>\n<p><b>-For as long as the body can stand, right grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, flamenco aficionados have always died with their boots on.<\/p>\n<p><b>-And totally broke, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Totally broke, yes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
