I didn\u2019t go there because I had to, but because I wanted to be there to write about it in\u00a0<i>El Correo<\/i>\u00a0newspaper, as I did the following day. It was an article which, incidentally, was among the newspaper\u2019s most read that day. In that piece I mentioned these lyrics sung by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Los-intocables-del-cante\">Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/a>,\u00a0<i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>, which I had never heard before:<\/p>\n<p><i>Mira que gitano soy<br \/>\nque si me encuentro una pala<br \/>\na cualquiera se la doy.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Look, what a Gypsy I am<br \/>\nIf I find a shovel,<br \/>\nI hand it to someone else.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then he sang other of his well-known lyrics:<\/p>\n<p><i>Hab\u00eda una gallinita<br \/>\nen medio de un llano<br \/>\na ver qui\u00e9n se resiste siendo gitano.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There was a little hen<br \/>\nIn the middle of a field<br \/>\nHow can any Gypsy resist.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For having mentioned the first lyrics above, a Gypsy activist (council of a town in Seville province), called me antigitanista (\u201canti-Gypsy\u201d) in her Facebook wall. Precisely, I had mentioned these lyrics because I thought it was interesting that someone of Gypsy stock had sung it. Oh well, it\u2019s just becoming popular to call me racist and anti-Gypsy, maybe that\u2019s why I went to this Gypsy festival to support the event, as apparently I can\u2019t stand Gypsies at all, according to some of them.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, this hurts, because I\u2019ve been working for forty years in behalf of an art, flamenco, which belongs to Gypsies, according to them. I also agree that this art cannot be conceived without Gypsies, although I would never say that it was solely created by Gypsies, because it\u2019s not true. If because of this I\u2019ll end up being forced to stop writing about flamenco, so be it. If I haven\u2019t done so yet, it\u2019s just because I happen to make a living off writing, this is my job, as in fact I\u2019m sick and tired of some of the things about this art. And I\u2019m even more sick and tired of the topic of being\u00a0<i>gitanista<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>antigitanista<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I have many friends in that important brotherhood of Seville who could speak about my relationship with the Gypsies of Seville and Triana. Two of them were at the bar where I had a coffee before the start of the festival, but didn\u2019t bothered to say hi. Then the celebrated producer Ricardo Pach\u00f3n showed up and gave me a cold greeting with a long face. Perhaps it was because I had rebuffed something he said a while ago, that in the 1950s there had been an \u201cexpulsion of Gypsies\u201d in Triana, when in fact it was an expulsion of poor people, Gypsy and non-Gypsy alike. Yet, it was convenient for him to say such thing, in order to promote a documentary he had made about Gypsies in that district of Seville.<\/p>\n<p>These days I\u2019ve been pondering this topic of\u00a0<i>gitanismo<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>antigitanismo<\/i>\u00a0and I\u2019ve wondered if perhaps I\u2019m one of those people who are prejudiced against Gypsies but don\u2019t realize it. I\u2019m serious. I\u2019m convinced that I\u2019m not, that it\u2019s the other way around, that I love the Gypsy people and I\u2019ve proven this during all these years, writing books about artists of that ethnicity and with all my other work, in general. However, I promise that I\u2019ll do my best to get to the bottom of this before I quit writing about flamenco for good.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I won\u2019t be calling anyone\u00a0<i>primo<\/i>\u00a0(\u201ccousin\u201d) or\u00a0<i>tito<\/i>\u00a0(\u201cuncle\u201d) unless they\u2019re from my own family, and even as the last name of my maternal grandfather was Pe\u00f1a, I don\u2019t think I have Gypsy blood in my veins. I would have loved to, but that\u2019s not the case, as far as I know. Besides, my singing style is too gach\u00f3 (non-Gypsy).<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: small;\">* Translation note: these two lyrics allude to the unfounded prejudice that Gypsies \u201clazy\u201d and \u201cthieves\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
