It still is very\u00a0<i>flamenca<\/i>, even as its glory days were when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Perrate-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7c600cf29064e5f24d50\">Perrate<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Gaspar-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56e6209c0cf201bfd277ec0a\">Gaspar<\/a>, Pepa la Feonga, Bambino,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Enrique-Montoya\/c112t\/56e623b50cf248388649fa7e\">Enrique Montoya<\/a>\u00a0and Curro still breathed and sang like God. A century ago, Perico el Pelao (relative of the Pav\u00f3ns) stood out, and one day Mercedes La Sarneta, from Jerez, showed up in Utrera, leaving there her essence\u00a0<i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0and a perfume that still lingers in its streets.<\/p>\n<p>Not all towns in Andalusia have the Gypsy feel of Utrera, and this was crucial for the development of flamenco in this area. The Gypsy yeast, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0would put it. Utrera owes its place in flamenco on account of its Gypsies, without meaning to downplay those artists who don\u2019t belong to this ethnic group, such as the great\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YCbeokyqcW0\">Curro de Utrera<\/a>, who had one of the most beautiful voices in cante and whom I absolutely love\u00a0<i>por fandangos<\/i>\u00a0: \u201c<i>Velero, porque yo lo gobernaba\u2026<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Utrera\u2019s Gypsy Brotherhood, with all its hits and misses, is the organization responsible for the fact that this ancient town renowned all over the world is nowadays a first-class reference in flamenco. They created the\u00a0<i>Potaje Gitano<\/i>\u00a0without realizing it would become the world\u2019s most famous flamenco festival, but here it is, with six decades of history and plenty of success in memory.<\/p>\n<p>I was about 17 years old when I first attended this festival held every summer in Utrera. On that same evening, June 28, 1975, I realized this was a very special town. That year, the festival was held in honor of one of the geniuses of Utrera, Bambino, and if my memory doesn\u2019t fail the performers that night were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pansequito-y-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Pura\/c112t\/573bb4c20cf20a8824ddf228\">Pansequito<\/a>, Gaspar de Utrera,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/23\/El-Turronero\">Turronero<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino\/c112t\/573bb16b0cf20a8824ddf007\">Rancapino<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/10\/Antonio-Suarez-y-Ram%C3%B3n-de-Algeciras\">Antonio Su\u00e1rez<\/a>, Enrique Montoya, Fa\u00edco,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/9\/7\/Miguel-Funi-una-Giralda-de-Lebrija\">Miguel Funi<\/a>, Diego Vargas,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/06\/El-Chato-de-Utrera\">Chato de Utrera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Angelita-Vargas\/c112t\/56cf4c930cf26bd1d3eef96e\">Angelita Vargas<\/a>\u00a0and Perrate, among many others. It was endless, although no one wanted it to end.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, though, the Potaje has felt too long. I\u2019m sorry to say this, but I must be sincere. It has felt long not just because those great artists are missing, but because everything has changed a lot. Maybe it\u2019s just me, as back then it was the time when I was discovering authentic flamenco and perhaps I\u2019ve idolized excessively those years and those artists who were so natural and genuine that they left an indelible impression on me.<\/p>\n<p>This year the\u00a0<i>Potaje Gitano<\/i>\u00a0has a good lineup, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-Pele\/c112t\/577f24a20cf2a27045f18292\">El Pele<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino<\/a>\u00a0Chico as the headliners. Then, there will be a party prepared by Luis de Chimenea, from Lebrija, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Macanita-Buler%C3%ADas\/c112t\/55f77b940cf2de902a86a7ee\">La Macanita<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!In%C3%A9s-Bac%C3%A1n-y-Antonio-Moya\/c112t\/577f2a550cf21e6e1ebd797d\">In\u00e9s Bac\u00e1n<\/a>, Tomasito, Tom\u00e1s de Perrate,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/19\/La-esencia-de-Perico-el-Pa%C3%B1ero\">Perico El Pa\u00f1ero<\/a>, David El Galli and Luis de Chimenea himself. In\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, Mar\u00eda Marrufo,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepe-Torres\/c112t\/5750eb5f0cf24c96159fb01f\">Pepe Torres<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/14\/Duquende-Jos%C3%A9-Andr%C3%A9s-Cort%C3%A9s-Farru-y-Pira%C3%B1a\">El Farru<\/a>\u00a0will perform, and the guitarists will be Pedro Mar\u00eda Pe\u00f1a,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Reyes-y-Antonio-Higuero\/c112t\/57a8cc0d0cf2b4e1e13169e3\">Antonio Higuero<\/a>\u00a0and Jos\u00e9 G\u00e1lvez, all this according to the event\u2019s official poster.<\/p>\n<p>The festival will honor Ram\u00f3n Calabuch,\u00a0<i>Moncho<\/i>, the celebrated Gypsy\u00a0<i>bolerista<\/i>\u00a0from Barcelona. The evening, then, is quite promising. So, those who haven\u2019t done it yet, be sure to get a table in this festival of festivals, the oldest of all and the one with the most Gypsy flavor.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
