Aficionados have always been critical and demanding, for as long as flamenco has been publicly known. We have to differentiate flamenco from other musical genres which are, let\u2019s say, more commercial, where everything goes and it\u2019s a free for all.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So, flamenco should be like bullfighting, sort of?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, kind of. No one would demand a bullfighter to come up with twenty new moves in each bullfight, all they have to do is what they\u2019re supposed to do and show some emotion. In my opinion, a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who is able to perform a\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a de Chac\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0properly is already interesting, regardless if he has a unique style or not. That\u2019s where we must set the bar high, competence is essential. I remember that on the occasion of the 1st\u00a0<i>Giraldillo del Cante<\/i>\u00a0contest, during the 1st\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>\u00a0in 1980,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Miguel-Vargas\">Miguel Vargas<\/a>\u00a0sang\u00a0<i>por sole\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>por seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0as it hadn\u2019t been done in ages in Seville. He wasn\u2019t even taking part in the contest, he was just part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/09\/08\/Rosa-Dur%C3%A1n\">Rosa Dur\u00e1n<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0ensemble, with Rafael Romero and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Chocolate-y-Perico-el-del-Lunar-hijo\/c112t\/57327cd80cf2d5f002bdc433\">Perico el del Lunar (son)<\/a>\u00a0at the guitars. Let\u2019s say that this was the performance of his life, which allowed him to make a living off\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0for many years thereafter. Yet, he wasn\u2019t an innovative\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but rather a traditional performer, although very good at that.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet, it\u2019s better when artists innovate, don\u2019t you think?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure, but no one can be forced to innovate, particularly if they don\u2019t have talent for it. Either there are innovators, or there aren\u2019t. Look, that girl from Barcelona who is so popular these days, Rosal\u00eda, she has something unique in her voice. It\u2019s a weak voice, but unique. Thus, some people greatly admire her for being unique and are making her rich, although she\u2019s not a good\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>. However, there are first-class\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>, great performers, who are barely noticed. \u201cIt\u2019s because they don\u2019t do anything new\u201d, they say. Yet, do they sing well, or not? That\u2019s something that should matter a lot, but it seems it doesn\u2019t, as if other things were more important.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Would the same apply in flamenco guitar?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Of course. Perhaps nowadays there are better guitarists than a century ago, but we\u2019re always talking about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ram%C3%B3n-Montoya\/c112t\/5695df660cf263fc5a881f60\">Montoya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ricardo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/55f7536a0cf2db6dcfb5bdd2\">Diego del Gastor<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-soledad-de-Manolo-Sanl%C3%BAcar\/c112t\/566a47510cf2391068765f14\">Manolo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco<\/a>\u2026\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Dani-de-Mor%C3%B3n-y-Kike-Terron\/c112t\/569589720cf2e94e3fb4a278\">Dani de Mor\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Diego-del-Morao-y-El-Pira%C3%B1a\/c112t\/5695885a0cf2e94e3fb4a119\">Diego del Morao<\/a>, to give just two examples of contemporary guitarists, among the youngest, are truly brilliant, yet they basically have to make a living of accompaniment or they would not have any work at all. Diego del Morao has a style, a feel, that not even Paco had. He should have a concert every week, playing so well,\u00a0<i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>, for example. And he doesn\u2019t imitate anyone. He\u2019s been influenced by the Jerez\u2019s school, of course, his father\u2019s school, but he\u2019s also an innovator.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Which area of flamenco is more prone to hogwash?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<i>Baile<\/i>, without a doubt. There are dozens of\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>, but artists who either innovate or perform traditional\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, almost none. It\u2019s all appearances, cute faces and sexy bodies, but little art. There\u2019s a lot of exhibitionism, plenty of it.<\/p>\n<p><b>-So, what should we do grandpa, give up flamenco?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-No, all we have to do is raise the bar and not fall for fake flamenco, nothing else.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Are flamenco aficionados knowledgeable, or not?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-There is a bit of everything. Soon we\u2019ll have the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0and once again the theaters will be full of people who have no clue and are unable to tell what\u2019s good flamenco and what isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Yet they pay up at the box office, grandpa\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Sure, and that validates everything\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>-What\u2019s to come, grandpa?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-What\u2019s happening today is a foretaste of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n<p><b>-I\u2019ll be thinking about this over the weekend.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
