Tomorrow, Tuesday July 3, I\u2019ll be giving a lecture at the Oyarz\u00e1bal hall in M\u00e1laga\u2019s provincial council, located at Plaza de la Marina. I\u2019ll be doing this within the scope of the International Flamenco Seminar organized by the\u00a0Escuela de Flamenco de Andaluc\u00eda<\/i>, a project that already is more than a project. I\u2019m excited to show a good amount of documents about 19th-century flamenco in general, but particularly about artists from M\u00e1laga, or who were related to this city, such as El Planeta, his nephew L\u00e1zaro Quintana, Silverio Franconetti, Fillo Jr. and La Andonda, Paco El Gandul and Tom\u00e1s El Nitri, among others. This lecture is the result of years of research and I celebrate the fact that I\u2019ve been asked to do it in M\u00e1laga, for all I\u2019ve researched in this city which is so beautiful and so\u00a0flamenca<\/i>, even as all the glory is often taken by Seville and C\u00e1diz, or vice-versa.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not that I want to downplay the impact of the so-called Lower Andalusia, but M\u00e1laga had a huge importance in the birth of flamenco, due to its rich folklore and specific artists of the 19th century who ended up there following the money of Heredia and its many\u00a0caf\u00e9s cantantes<\/i>. In the 1800s, M\u00e1laga became the financial capital of Spain, and this contributed to a lively flamenco scene in the theaters and\u00a0caf\u00e9s cantantes<\/i>. Besides El Planeta, the\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from C\u00e1diz who settled in M\u00e1laga in the 1830s and who died of old age in 1856 on San Juan street in downtown M\u00e1laga, it\u2019s very important continuing to highlight the great star of that province of Andalusia, Juan Breva, whose 100th anniversary of his death is celebrated this year.<\/p>\n
Besides Breva, another important\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0of M\u00e1laga was Canario de \u00c1lora, who revolutionized\u00a0cante por malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0and who was killed in 1885 by the father of Rubia Colomer. Another great artist from \u00c1lroa who came to Seville with Canario in 1884 was El Perote, who married Lola P\u00e9rez (a\u00a0bailaora<\/i>\u00a0who was daughter of Maestro P\u00e9rez) and who also died young, without a doubt as a consequence of the harsh life artists led in those days. We can\u2019t forget mentioning the greatest\u00a0malaga\u00f1era<\/i>\u00a0of that province, La Trini, whose life story still needs to be told, particularly where, when and how this great\u00a0maestra del cante<\/i>\u00a0ended her days.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m happy to go to M\u00e1laga, because even if I\u2019m from Seville, I acknowledge the importance of this city in flamenco. It\u2019s been years since I last gave a lecture in Seville, where, sadly, less and less people has any interest in the history of our art. Many of Seville\u2019s flamenco stars have been forgotten, such as Frasco el Colorao, Lorente and, above all, Silverio Franconetti. My fellow Sevillians don\u2019t really care to know anything about them.<\/p>\n
Yet, the people of M\u00e1laga has shown an increased interest about the pioneers of this art. Months ago I was at the\u00a0Pe\u00f1a Juan Breva<\/i>\u00a0and now I\u2019m back to talk about the same topic: flamenco pioneers not just from M\u00e1laga but also from other provinces in Andalusia. In fact, the\u00a0Pe\u00f1a Juan Breva<\/i>\u00a0commissioned me to write the biography of El Planeta, and I\u2019m working on it, although I haven\u2019t had much time to finish this book.<\/p>\n
It will be a great pleasure to share all these documents with the people of M\u00e1laga tomorrow at 7:30 PM and have a good chat about this art we\u2019re so passionate about.<\/p>\n
