{"id":5280,"date":"2018-07-30T15:07:19","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T15:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/artistas-que-cierran-y-abren-etapas\/"},"modified":"2019-02-16T19:33:45","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T18:33:45","slug":"artists-who-open-and-close-new-eras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/artists-who-open-and-close-new-eras\/","title":{"rendered":"Artists who open and close new eras"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s something that the great photographer Pepe Lamarca said the other day in the\u00a0<i>Diario de C\u00e1diz<\/i>\u00a0newspaper, and I agree with it: the young cantaores are going back to traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>and avoiding catchy little tunes, perhaps because nowadays they\u2019re able to produce their own records and don\u2019t have to follow the impositions of multinational record labels. I love listening to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/entrevistas-archivos\/samuel-serrano\">Samuel Serrano<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/06\/Mar%C3%ADa-Terremoto-y-Miguel-Poveda\">Mar\u00eda Terrremoto<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/08\/29\/Pedro-el-Grana%C3%Adno\">Pedro el Grana\u00edno<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">\u00a0Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Reyes-y-Periquin\/c112t\/56aa9db50cf205a1e8531fed\">Antonio Reyes<\/a>, Manuel de la Tomasa, Pepito el Boleco or To\u00f1i Fern\u00e1ndez and to see how the evoke the older days and honor the memory of the great, forgotten artists.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s something that was meant to happen sooner or later, because some artists really abused performing the most trashy and commercial\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, those \u201c<i>tanguitos cameloncios<\/i>\u201d (\u201clittle non-sensical\u00a0<i>tangos<\/i>\u201d) as Emilio Jim\u00e9nez D\u00edaz used to call them when he talked about flamenco in\u00a0<i>Radio Popular<\/i>. That was in the 70s and 80s, a good time in flamenco without a doubt, but also a time when some artists were more concerned with selling records, instead of singing properly.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve said this many times already: it\u2019s totally compatible to preserve traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and also to create new things (for those who have such ability), which incidentally is what has always happened. If nowadays people perform the\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a del Mellizo<\/i>, and it\u2019s considered a classic flamenco style, it\u2019s because that historical\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from C\u00e1diz was a creative artist and he succeeded in creating a new\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a<\/i>, different from all others. The same applies to\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0and guitar.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll always enjoy someone getting on a stage and singing a round of traditional\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>, just like when a symphonic orchestra plays a masterful piece by Mozart, Vivaldi or Manuel de Falla. Flamenco is the great classical music from Andalusia and let\u2019s hope we never cease to perform the great legacy of artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ram%C3%B3n-Montoya\/c112t\/5695df660cf263fc5a881f60\">Montoya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ricardo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Are we on the dawn of a new golden age in flamenco? I don\u2019t know, I have my doubts about it. Yet, I\u2019m sure that there is a new generation of young artists with a bright future. If we compare our days with all the history of flamenco, we\u2019ll feel discouraged, naturally. Even if we just compare it with the age when flamenco summer festivals were born, in the 1960s and 1970s. Perhaps it\u2019s a mistake trying to compare this age with any other, and we should rather accept that this is what we have and, like in any other period in flamenco history, there is a bit of everything.<\/p>\n<p>I like when new artists look to the past to refresh styles, schools and sounds. Let\u2019s hope they keep performing traditional flamenco. And if one genius comes up, stirring it all, he\u2019ll be welcome.
