I was able to listen to great artists of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, from artists in the twilight of their careers such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/03\/01\/%C2%BFSe-acuerdan-de-Antonio-El-Sevillano\">Antonio el Sevillano<\/a>\u00a0and Manolo Fregenal, to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/dos-anos-sin-juan-el-lebrijano\">Lebrijano<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>, three essential voices in the history of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and great renovators. Yet, I have fond memories of the artists of\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0who delighted me with a way of dancing that has disappeared a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to forget Pepe R\u00edos, from Mor\u00f3n, who married one of the daughters of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>. The first time I saw him dance I felt a pinch, the famed\u00a0<i>pellizco<\/i>, all over my body, and it wasn\u2019t in a theater or in a summer festival, but at\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca El Chozas<\/i>, in Seville, where he introduced some of his best students, among them El Mistela. Seeing him, so Gypsy and elegant marking\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0with his cane while his disciples danced, was pure glory. He only made a few moves,\u00a0<i>pata\u00edtas<\/i>, just enough for me to feel pinch of Seville\u2019s true Gypsy\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>There was just one\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0whom I liked even more than Pepe R\u00edos:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Antonio El Farruco<\/a>, the grandfather of those youngsters who follow his school nowadays, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/12\/14\/Farruquito-y-Juan-Ram%C3%Adrez\">Farruquito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/14\/Duquende-Jos%C3%A9-Andr%C3%A9s-Cort%C3%A9s-Farru-y-Pira%C3%B1a\">El Farru<\/a>\u00a0and El Carpeta. I had the opportunity to see Antonio Montoya Flores, Farruco, many times on the stages, and it was something hard to explain. He was already a veteran\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>, more than forty years old, but had an incredible natural strength. His daughters,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/08\/03\/Rosario-Montoya-La-Farruca\">La Farruca<\/a>\u00a0and La Faraona, were still very young and danced amazingly. Farruco\u2019s son, the first Farruquito, had died already, which was a huge tragedy in the family. He was just 18 years old and danced wonderfully, but a motorcycle accident ended his life, the life of one of the most promising young\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0of that time.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0that I liked a lot was Rafael El Negro, from Triana, husband of the\u00a0<i>maestra<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Matilde-la-trabajadora\/c112t\/578318380cf2f626feb1af85\">Matilde Coral<\/a>\u00a0and one of the most classy and elegant Gypsy\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0who has ever performed on a stage, always with his arms up and having an impressive agility. Rafael and Curro V\u00e9lez, who owned\u00a0<i>Tablao El Arenal<\/i>, were the two great\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0from Triana. Other outstanding\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0who would come later were Paco Vega, from La Cava, related to Gitanillo (that is, the mythical Curro Puya) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/02\/02\/Manuel-Corrales-El-Mimbre\">El Mimbre<\/a>, brother of Matilde and Pepa Coral. What an amazing\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0El Mimbre was, and how amazing Paco Vega still is!<\/p>\n<p>I also had the huge privilege to see performances by\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0who went down in history, some of them still alive, such as Matilde Coral, who without a doubt is the greatest star of the last sixty years in Seville\u2019s\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. Yet, I don\u2019t recall attending any performance by the other great\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0of those days,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Trini-Espa%C3%B1a-Enrique-de-Melchor\/c112t\/57aa63680cf2b4e1e132df3b\">Trini Espa\u00f1a<\/a>, who died forgotten, away from almost everything. If I ever saw her perform, I was too young, and I wouldn\u2019t be able to describe her way of dancing other than by watching videos. I did greatly enjoy the performances of other\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0from Seville,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuela-Vargas\/c112t\/5750edae0cf27b4271df3455\">Manuela Vargas<\/a>\u00a0, who produced those great shows, the best of those days, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/08\/08\/Fernanda-Romero\">Fernanda Romero<\/a>, whom I befriended, somehow. What a great personality she had!<\/p>\n<p>I had the good fortune of witnessing the first important steps of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2018\/05\/31\/Antonio-Gades-y-Cristina-Hoyos\">Cristina Hoyos<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuela-Carrasco\/c112t\/569858210cf2e94e3fb86b22eady?\">Manuela Carrasco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Angelita-Vargas\/c112t\/56cf4c930cf26bd1d3eef96e\">Angelita Vargas<\/a>, Concha Vargas,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ana-Parrilla\/c112t\/57199ad10cf2331db0fc12fc\">Ana Parrilla<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepa-Montes\/c112t\/5750ec860cf245cf719deb1a\">Pepa Montes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/el-baile-jondo-de-milagros-mengibar\">Milagros Meng\u00edbar<\/a>, Carmen Montiel, Ana Mar\u00eda Bueno and many others, and of seeing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Isabel-Bay%C3%B3n\/c112t\/5750ed0b0cf27b4271df339d\">Isabel Bay\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0perform when she was six or seven years old, with that old wisdom she already possessed. I remember one evening when she sang a little for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730Ssss\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>, and it was spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>I say all this because it\u2019s natural that I\u2019m too demanding with today\u2019s\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. I don\u2019t mean to say that there aren\u2019t great\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0nowadays. It\u2019s just that in those days flamenco had another flavor and there was an incredible\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>. It\u2019s also true that I was forty years younger and I was more impressionable. Yet, I can\u2019t help, whenever I attend a\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0performance, remembering those days.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
