There were many others I didn\u2019t mention, because it\u2019s impossible to name them all in one single article. The same will happen in today\u2019s article, devoted to the artists of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0I was able to get acquainted with and were essential in my life. Most of them are gone now, even as they never totally leave us.<\/p>\n<p>Even as many people have often questioned this often, one of the first flamenco artists I ever admired was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Mairena\/c112t\/55f74f7c0cf2de902a868807\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>, whom I\u2019ve criticized a lot, and whom I\u2019ll continue to criticize whenever I have to, because I\u2019m a critic by trade. On the other hand, Mairena was also very critical with other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, and also with pretty much everything. I didn\u2019t always understand that aspect of his personality, but eventually I did.<\/p>\n<p>It took me a while for me to embrace Mairena, perhaps because I became a flamenco aficionado when I was very young and I first gravitated towards other younger artists. Before I was twenty years old, I liked\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/10\/Gabriel-Moreno-y-Carlos-Pardo\">Gabriel Moreno<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/56fddd580cf2d5ab7777c848\">Lebrijano<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>, La Marelu,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/16\/Aquel-sello-de-Mar%C3%ADa-Vargas\">Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/23\/El-Turronero\">Turronero<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-nueva-ilusi%C3%B3n-de-Chiquetete\/c112t\/564558210cf21009be84d126\">Chiquetete<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Los-intocables-del-cante\">Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/07\/23\/El-Chozas-de-Sevilla\">El Chozas<\/a>. Someone very dear to me once invited me to go further back in time and listen to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>, Antonio Mairena and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I listened to Juan Talega, in records, I have to admit that I was shocked because I couldn\u2019t comprehend such a worn-out voice, although it had a great depth. I knew at once that it was something big and important, but I needed time to figure out that extremely pure\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Something similar happened with Antonio Mairena, named above. Oddly, I ended up liking this master from the time I listened to a recital by his brother Manolo, at Seville\u2019s\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca El Chozas<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, Antonio Mairena and Juan Talega are two of my most important references in flamenco. Just like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Perrate-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7c600cf29064e5f24d50\">Perrate<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Soto-Sordera\/c112t\/55f754a80cf2de902a868a93\">El Sordera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Terremoto-de-Jerez\/c112t\/569c5f4c0cf224d46570178e\">Terremoto<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">La Paquera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Perla-de-C%C3%A1diz-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/5701d02b0cf234e91927bc9b\">La Perla de C\u00e1diz<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Villar\/c112t\/578ed2910cf27c0103597a3a\">Juan Villar<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Chano-Lobato\/c112t\/577347340cf2f8d6d10f225d\">Chano Lobato<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFQu%C3%A9-se-ha-llevado-Agujetas\/c112t\/56805d8b0cf23a10fe36da2a\">Manuel Agujetas<\/a>and Rafael Romero. If there were no more\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0ever, we could listen to flamenco for a thousand years just with those mentioned above. That\u2019s just my opinion, though, and anyone is free to disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, everything changed in my life when I discovered\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, her brother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef62180cf20dad56fae57a\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Manuel Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Recordando-a-El-Carbonerillo\/c112t\/56b81aa40cf2dc1600e907a6\">Carbonero<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/03\/01\/%C2%BFSe-acuerdan-de-Antonio-El-Sevillano\">Sevillano<\/a>, Manolo Fregenal,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/05\/17\/Un-cantaor-de-cantaores\">Antonio el de la Calz\u00e1<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2015\/01\/01\/Canalejas-de-Puerto-Real\">Canalejas de Puerto Real<\/a>. Later,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/10\/20\/Jos%C3%A9-Cepero\">Cepero<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/10\/20\/El-Peluso\">Peluso<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/cumpleanos-de-antonio-el-chaqueta\">Antonio el Chaqueta<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All those mentioned above turned me into an aficionado open to enjoy the different flamenco schools. This allows me to enjoy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arc%C3%A1ngel-en-el-Tablao\/c112t\/565e7b060cf211cbf012723d\">Arc\u00e1ngel<\/a>\u00a0and, at the same time,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/05\/08\/Lo-mejor-de-El-Torta-est%C3%A1-por-venir-1\">El Torta<\/a>. I\u2019ll never understand those who only like one single flamenco school or even one single artist. It\u2019s like eating stew or fish soup every day, refusing to taste a steak or smoked salmon.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I\u2019ve been asked which record I would bring, by which\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>, if I were to go live in a desert island until I died of old age. I\u2019d do like Noah at the time of the Deluge: I\u2019d build a huge boat and I\u2019ll put there all records I could find, by artists representing all schools and all styles. And if I were forced to take the records by just one\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, which I hope would never happen, I wouldn\u2019t have any doubt: I\u2019ll take anything to do with Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p><i>Aqu\u00ed se acab\u00f3 el carb\u00f3n.<br \/>\nQue nadie encienda la fragua,<br \/>\nque ha muerto Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We\u2019ve ran out of coal<br \/>\nLet\u2019s not fire up the forge,<br \/>\nBecause Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n is dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Translated by P.
