When, tired of adventures, they decide to return to this genre, and they find it\u2019s hard to regain that flamenco attitude and feel. We could name many artists as examples, but we can also do the other way around and name those who never left the flamenco scene:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730Ssss\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>, for example, and also Rafael Romero,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFQu%C3%A9-se-ha-llevado-Agujetas\/c112t\/56805d8b0cf23a10fe36da2a\">Manuel Agujetas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-gran-maestro-de-Triana\/c112t\/572c03780cf25326f6c6951b\">Naranjito de Triana<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/rancapino-o-una-una-declaracion-de-amor\">Rancapino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One day I mentioned this to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Juan Valderrama<\/a>, and he admitted that I had a point. He was a clear example of someone who switched sides, even as he never fully abandoned the traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0accompanied by guitar only. There\u2019s nothing wrong with this, because artists are free to do whatever they want with their careers, yet Valderrama admitted that once an artist leaves flamenco, it\u2019s hard to go back, something which also happened to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Manolo Caracol<\/a>, who never fully abandoned flamenco either. The same can be said about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-nueva-ilusi%C3%B3n-de-Chiquetete\/c112t\/564558210cf21009be84d126\">Antonio Chiquetete<\/a>, a more contemporary example.<\/p>\n<p>This keeps happening. \u00bfWhy? I think\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0end up getting tired of traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. It\u2019s like if they thought \u201cThere\u2019s nothing else for me to do here\u201d. Let\u2019s take, for example, the case of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFEs-Miguel-Poveda-un-cantaor-discutido\/c112t\/56aaefe60cf205a1e853fbda\">Miguel Poveda<\/a>, one of the great Spanish music stars in our days. Does anyone know the name of all the albums released by this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Cataunya, without checking Google? I don\u2019t, and I say this sincerely, aware that I\u2019ll get in trouble with his thousands of fans. I have all his albums, but I only know the name of two or three of them by memory. Yet, I know the names of every and each of the albums released by Mairena,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If Miguel Poveda decided to leave it all and go back to a flamenco-only repertoire, he would be faced with an unpleasant surprise, as no one would be interested in his\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>,\u00a0<i>mineras<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0any more. That\u2019s why he\u2019ll never do such thing, besides the fact that he won\u2019t ever give up all the money he makes by singing popular songs. Poveda is a singer, not a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, because he left the flamenco scene a long time ago. I admit I never liked him badly enough to follow his career closely, or to rush to the music store to buy hist latest albums.<\/p>\n<p>Another case is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mayte-Mart%C3%ADn-desconcertante-y-libre\/c112t\/5624632a0cf2c6c6437c0ce8\">Mayte Mart\u00edn<\/a>, my favourite\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0for many years, perhaps since I discovered her at the La Uni\u00f3n Festival in 1987, when she won the\u00a0<i>L\u00e1mpara Minera<\/i>\u00a0award. I like two of her albums,\u00a0<i>Muy Fr\u00e1gil<\/i>(1994) and\u00a0<i>Querencia<\/i>\u00a0(2000), out of the eight albums she has released, if I\u2019m not mistaken, because I usually write by memory. It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t care about the rest, because I have all her albums, but I only like her when she sings flamenco, and lately I\u2019ve noticed she\u2019s been far removed from the\u00a0<i>jondo<\/i>\u00a0scene, perhaps too much. Thus, nowadays I barely bother to find out what she\u2019s been doing and where she performs.<\/p>\n<p>I get that it\u2019s hard to make a living with just\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>tarantas<\/i>, just to give an example, but it has never been easy to make a living, back in the old days and now.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0used to say that the great singers of\u00a0<i>siguiriyas<\/i>, like Manuel Torres and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Mojama-%C2%BFredescubriendo-a-un-genio\/c112t\/5600abed0cf25fa7fe12dd39\">Juan Mojama<\/a>, ended up wearing patched-up pants.
