It happened in 1977 at\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/i>, in Seville. Paco Robles, the writer and journalist from that city, can attest to it. That day, the master of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0gave me his business card and invited me to his house on 12 Padre Pedro Ayala street, which I believe is now for sale. I accepted the invitation and one afternoon I went there to have a coffee with him and his sister Rosario, a woman of extraordinary kindness, who lived with the master.<\/p>\n<p>When I arrived, Rosario asked me to wait for a little bit in the bar next door, because Mairena was with a very important visitor, and I did so. The previous evening, Antonio and his brothers,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/11\/17\/Curro-Mairena\">Curro<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/un-saetero-monumental\">Manuel<\/a>, had performed a recital for Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez (then Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers&#8217; Party) in a chalet belonging to his son-in-law in Dos Hermanas, and now they were giving Antonio a gift: a bronze statuette of another famous socialist leader.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as I sat with Mairena on a table, he opened the wooden box and showed me the statuette. \u201cDo you know who this is?\u201d, he asked me. \u201cYes, Pablo Iglesias\u201d, I told him. He was rather surprised that, being so young, I would know about the founder of the Socialist Workers&#8217; Party, but at that time I had an avid interest in politics, as well as in\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio was also surprised that I would recognize all the artists in the photographs hanging on the walls of his studio, which was a veritable museum. We then talked about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and he was once again surprised that I was already a well-versed aficionado, being just 19 years old. We talked a lot about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>, who was his role model, and also about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>\u00a0and Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula.<\/p>\n<p>There are still die-hard fans of Antonio Mairena (<i>mairenistas<\/i>) in the town of Mairena and in other parts of Andalusia who question my friendship with him, whom I consider one of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in flamenco history. I will never say he was\u00a0<i>the<\/i>\u00a0best because I don\u2019t think he was, although this is always a matter of personal taste. I can say whatever name I like best, and Antonio is definitely one of my favorite\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, an essential reference, and at the time when I aspired to become a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0he represented the best school of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been over forty years since that meeting with the brilliant master from Mairena. Now I live in his hometown, Mairena del Alcor, where I\u2019m not really involved in matters of\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>, because I\u2019m never asked to. I don\u2019t say this because I\u2019m hurt (I\u2019m not), but because it\u2019s a fact.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that I had an\u00a0<i>anit-mairenista<\/i>\u00a0phase, but it was mainly because I rebelled against\u00a0<i>mairenismo<\/i>, which is almost like a sect in many aspects. I\u2019ve always been able to tell the difference between the school of Antonio Mairena, which is very important, from the arrogant and fanatical\u00a0<i>mairenismo<\/i>\u00a0which has harmed so much the reputation of this master. I mean, in a way, I\u2019m a\u00a0<i>mairenista<\/i>, an admirer of Antonio and his brothers, Curro and Manuel. Yet, I still don\u2019t get the ideological aspect of\u00a0<i>mairenismo<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Today I want to remember that meeting at the master\u2019s house, that nice, long hour, seated next to him, talking about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>. I also want to remember his smile, when he saw me enthralled looking at the photographs in his little studio: Manuel Torres, Pastora, Tom\u00e1s, Juan Talega, El Nitri\u2026 And, for sure, I want to remember that moment when he told me on the street, as we said our goodbyes: \u201cGypsy-Andalusian\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0needs young people like you, so that it never dies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
