I didn\u2019t like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-momento-dulce-de-Israel-Galv%C3%A1n\/c112t\/5683464d0cf236d403925031\">Israel Galv\u00e1n<\/a>\u2019s production,\u00a0<i>Arena<\/i>, performed at the Real Maestranza bullfighting ring, but at the end it was greatly acclaimed, with some among the public giving it a standing ovation. By then I had already left the theater, but I saw that in a video the following day. I don\u2019t object if those aficionados enjoyed the show, but I have to admit that I\u2019m worried by the fact that anything performed at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0is greatly acclaimed, because flamenco has always been an art of well-informed aficionados.<\/p>\n<p>I remember that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/03\/01\/Who-remembers-Antonio-El-Sevillano\">Antonio el Sevillano<\/a>, the great performer of fandangos, told me one day that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0had once stopped performing on a stage because the public cheered and applauded everything, and that annoyed her. \u201cPeople should be able to tell\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>I know well that flamenco is a matter of personal tastes. I don\u2019t like Israel Galv\u00e1n now as much as I liked him at the beginning of his career, his productions bore me to tears and I avoid attending his shows unless I have no other choice. I appreciate his art and skill, and I celebrate the fact that he is a reference in the world of\u00a0<i>baile flamenco<\/i>, but as\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0aficionado, I no longer have any interest in him. Thus, since I believe people should be coherent, whenever I attend his productions I freely express my opinions and say what I think about it. Is this so hard to understand? Apparently, it\u2019s very hard indeed.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t like the format of the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>, I think it\u2019s terrible, among other things because to sell so many tickets there has to be lots of shows, and not all the shows are good. The\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0should only feature the very best, regardless of the fact that promising young performers should also be given the opportunity to perform. I\u2019ll give one example: why did they bring Rosal\u00eda this year, if she\u2019s such a bad\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>? She might be good performing her own music, but she has no clue about\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>. Do you know how many good\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>would be delighted to perform at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>? Regarding\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, one of the best\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0in our days, for many years, has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-Junco\/c112t\/5750ebae0cf2b2ec517bc305\">El Junco<\/a>, but all projects he presents at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0have been rejected. They don\u2019t want him to perform at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>, and I really don\u2019t know why, because he\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>My hands hurt of writing so often that flamenco festivals have a big responsibility with our art, and that it\u2019s not just a matter of selling tickets. Yet, we have to start by saying that not just anyone should be put in charge of a festival, and that\u2019s done often.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Are things that bad?<\/i>\u201d, asked Alejandro Luque last Sunday when interviewing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/13\/Los-intocables-del-cante\">Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<i>El Correo de Andaluc\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0newspaper. Jos\u00e9 answered: \u201c<i>If you want to know what\u2019s the state of flamenco nowadays, just attend the Festival of Mairena del Alcor. Look, I\u2019ve been to Austria, and there they have a festival honoring Mozart every year. Yet here, on the other hand, Don Antonio Mairena is thrown down the drain<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This may sound like a tantrum, and it would be justified since Jos\u00e9 hasn\u2019t performed in the Mairena festival for sixteen years, even as he\u2019s one of the last masters of\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0left, and he\u2019s passionate about the Mairena school. Is this due to the personal tastes of the mayor? Certainly. Yet, common sense and responsibility should be above personal tastes and the need to sell two thousand tickets in a festival.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
