Among them, he told me that he didn\u2019t study at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I listened to the cantaores and cantaoras in those social gatherings. I listened to La Moreno, who barely had any voice left; to Ni\u00f1o Gloria de Jerez, who ended his days very poor; to<a>Arturo<\/a>, the older brother of\u00a0<a>Pastora<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a>Tom\u00e1s<\/a>, from who I learned two or three seguiriyas<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t you listen to slate records in gramophones?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I didn\u2019t even have enough money to eat. How could I possibly afford a gramophone or records which costed as much as a laborer\u2019s daily pay? At La Alameda there were bars with gramophones, and sometimes I\u2019d sit down and listen to records of\u00a0<a>Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a>Manuel Vallejo<\/a>. But I learned to sing in rooms and listening to artists in theaters or family reunions. That way of learning was better than today\u2019s<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chocolate told me that one day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/14\/Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0asked him to sing a\u00a0<i>cante por ton\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0of Arturo which the master had never been able to learn in gatherings, because Mairena and Arturo didn\u2019t get along as a result of an argument they had after Tom\u00e1s passed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Antonio wanted to know everything about that ton\u00e1, and I sang it for him several times. That was the way he learned, maybe that\u2019s why he was a bit too technical<\/i>\u201d. Chocolate didn\u2019t dare too say that Mairena was too cold and brainy, although that\u2019s what he thought.<\/p>\n<p>The way of learning has changed, so the way of singing has changed too. There have always been imitators through flamenco history, but nowadays there are more than ever. In fact, those\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>who perform the most in festivals don\u2019t have their own unique style, but are followers of one or other\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0(I don\u2019t think I have to say names).<\/p>\n<p>Chocolate told me about his style of fandango.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>When I was a kid, everyone and their dog sang fandangos in Seville. There were twenty or thirty geniuses able to pierce people\u2019s hearts with their singing, and I don\u2019t mean the famous ones, like\u00a0<a>El Carbonero<\/a>,\u00a0<a>El de la Carz\u00e1<\/a>and\u00a0<a>El Sevillano<\/a>, who were big stars, but aficionados who worked as street vendors, or in grocery stores or at the Cruzcampo brewery. My style of fandango has a lot of those anonymous singers whom I listened to in the taverns of La Alameda and La Macarena. Next to today\u2019s new singers, those were true geniuses<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We must categorically dispel the myth that all of today\u2019s\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0learned to sing listening from records. I don\u2019t believe this, even as it has been said often. I\u2019ve seen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Arc%C3%A1ngel-en-el-Tablao\/c112t\/565e7b060cf211cbf012723d\">Arc\u00e1ngel<\/a>\u00a0in parties, when he was almost a kid, listening to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/10\/20\/Paco-Toronjo\">Paco Toronjo<\/a>\u00a0in Huelva. And I can imagine the childhood experiences of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>\u00a0in Jerez, his birthplace, listening to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Moneo-El-Torta\/c112t\/571998e80cf28f7f9b9b7711\">Juan Moneo\u00a0<i>El Torta<\/i><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mora%C3%ADto-Chico-Fernando-de-la-Morena\/c112t\/55f77be40cf2db6dcfb5d98b\">Fernando el de la Morena<\/a>. Or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino Chico<\/a>, who was just a kid when he already listened to all the great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who performed with his father.<\/p>\n<p>So, how come today\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0seems so cold and brainy, generally speaking? At least that\u2019s what I hear from many aficionados. Perhaps it\u2019s the obsession with technical perfection, I don\u2019t know. Or maybe it\u2019s the voice amplifiers. Likely it\u2019s the way of life, which is very different than what it was eighty years ago. That was Chocolate\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I had to pierce the soul of a se\u00f1orito to be able to eat something that day. Either I made him cry, or he wouldn\u2019t pay me anything.
