{"id":5207,"date":"2018-09-16T17:23:57","date_gmt":"2018-09-16T17:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/el-repaso-de-andres-marin\/"},"modified":"2019-02-16T08:59:48","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T07:59:48","slug":"andres-marins-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/andres-marins-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Andr\u00e9s Mar\u00edn&#8217;s review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seville\u2019s summer is usually quite hot in September, but there\u2019s always a chance of rainy and stormy weather, like it happened a few days ago,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.labienal.com\/cancelacion-del-espectaculo-del-hotel-triana-son-de-penas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resulting in the cancellation of two open-air shows<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>. Wasn\u2019t there any alternate venue? No, there wasn\u2019t. It was quite something hearing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/06\/02\/Carmen-Ledesma-1\">Carmen Ledesma<\/a>, the great\u00a0<i>bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Seville and one of the affected artists, saying that people had come to see her show from as far as Germany or Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that I just want to pan the organization of this festival of Seville, but there is no option other than pointing out these errors, even as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/elcorreoweb.es\/cultura\/en-sevilla-lo-que-gusta-es-el-morbo-y-destruir-HX4505845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0Andr\u00e9s Mar\u00edn said yesterday in an interview published in El Correo newspaper<\/a>\u00a0that we like to \u201cdestroy\u201d. In my opinion, when criticism is well-argued and done in good faith, it\u2019s a positive thing and helps to improve this flamenco event in the capital of Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard some people say that those of us who criticize the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0have a hidden agenda. Let\u2019s see, how do I profit by criticizing some aspects of a festival who has been so important for me, as I began my career of flamenco critic precisely at the time when the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0got started? I admit that sometimes we critics are perhaps too hard or too demanding, but that is something very different than having a hidden agenda. The flamenco critics in Seville are hard, without a doubt, something that\u2019s not easy, by the way, because to be hard we have to really know what we\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, this\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>\u00a0and choreographer from Seville is an artist much pampered by flamenco critics, although now and then he fumbles with insufferable productions. Apparently, his work is better appreciated in France or Holland, than in Spain. Perhaps he\u2019s an artist better suited for those countries and not for Andalusia, where traditional\u00a0<i>baile flamenco<\/i>\u00a0is still much loved and some people frown upon artists dancing flamenco with a hen on top of their heads, like he did in the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>. Here, in Seville, we prefer our hens in stews or for laying eggs.<\/p>\n<p>What should we do with shows like that of Israel Galv\u00e1n at the Real Maestranza venue in Seville? Should we criticize it or not, when we review it? It was an artistic and financial failure, thus the organizers of the festival would bear some responsibility for it, or not? They would also be responsible for the good things, of course, although I have never seen a program as feeble as this year\u2019s edition of the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>. It was too much, considering the time available.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding that last note, I wonder if there\u2019s anyone already working on the next\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0festival. Because that\u2019s the way it should be. As soon as this edition ends, the numbers and the financial statements will come out, Zoido certainly won\u2019t be the director any more, and things will get started all over again. Personally, I\u2019m more interested in the artistic results than in the financial results, although I\u2019m aware that the latter are also important, because the festival is funded with public money and the economy is in such bad shape that this aspect cannot be ignored or dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>As I write these lines, I still haven\u2019t seen Andr\u00e9s Mar\u00edn\u2019s new production, D. Quixote, performed yesterday at the Maestranza theater. I\u2019ve heard all sorts of opinions, some good, some bad. Let\u2019s see how it goes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
